  • Running: Jemez Trail Runs results--see photo slideshow

    Nearly 500 people completed the three Jemez Mountain Trail Run races Saturday.

    Los Alamos hosted the event Saturday. Racers had a choice between 50-mile, 50-kilometer and half-marathon varieties.

    Event director Bill Geist said things went off Saturday with few hitches.

    "I thought it went really well," Geist said. "All but one of the surveys we got back said they liked it and the people who ran the aid stations really liked it because they didn't have to worry about keeping water cups filled."

    This year's race was cupless, meaning racers had to keep their own water with them rather than grab water cups at the stations.

    Sullivan Field is closed

    Los Alamos Public Schools announced that Sullivan Field and the running track are closed for the summer.
    The closure of Sullivan Field is for crews to install a new artificial playing surface.
    Those with questions should call 663-2531.

  • Girls track and field: LA's star pulls off unlikely trifecta at state

    ALBUQUERQUE — Doubling up on a shot put and javelin state title isn’t unheard of. Neither is winning both a javelin and 100 meter dash state championship.
    But Chase Ealey did something that might never have been done before and, except for a potential repeat performance in 2012, might not be done for years to come when she pulled off a win in all three events this weekend.
    Ealey, the rock star of the 2011 Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team rocked the Class 4A state championship meet last weekend, picking up three individual wins and helping the Hilltopper girls 400 meter relay team to a state championship.

  • Running: Rees is top predictor in Pace Race Tuesday

    John Rees was the top predictor at this week’s Atomic City Roadrunners’ Pace Race, held at Barranca Mesa.
    Rees finished the long course of Tuesday’s Pace Race with a prediction error of just three seconds.
    Tuesday’s 3-mile course ventured into Bayo Canyon.
    Rees topped Daren Jones, who had the top prediction on the 1-mile course. Jones missed his predicted finish time by six seconds. Eric Burnside was off by seven seconds on the 3-mile course.
    Ben Rees was the fastest finisher on the 1-mile course with his time of 7:26. Charlie Hills was the fastest female, finishing in 8:47.

  • Rugby: LA team clinches state title Sunday

    The Los Alamos girls rugby team earned the New Mexico High School State Championship last weekend.
    The championship tournament was played Saturday and Sunday at the Municipal Recreation Complex in Santa Fe.
    In the final, Los Alamos topped Albuquerque’s Hermanitas 34-0. Carlin Morris, Jodi Cull-Host and Orli Shlachter scored tries during the championship match for Los Alamos.
    “We have had a long season, but hard work, determination and devotion to the sport has paid off,” Los Alamos coach John Morris said to his team following the win. “I watched so many of you place your fears behind you and embrace the game that it was hard for me to restrain my enthusiasm as the weekend played out.”

  • College: Ahlers inks with Coast Guard Academy

    Madison Ahlers is not one to back down from a challenge.
    So it makes sense that in the next phase of her life she wants to become a helicopter pilot.
    Ahlers, a three-sport athlete at Los Alamos High School, signed her National Letter of Intent last week to attend the United States Coast Guard Academy. Ahlers will attend an academy prep school in 2011-12 and board the academy’s ship the following year.
    Once she gets there, she will play both soccer and compete in both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

    Tour de Los Alamos returns June 19

    The Roadrunners Cycling Club will host the 39th annual Tour de Los Alamos June 19.
    The Tour de Los Alamos is a road cycling race for men, women and juniors. The race consists of several distance categories for cyclists of different abilities.
    Price for participation is $25 prior to the day of the race, $45 on race day. All cyclists must have a USA Cycling license and an approved helmet.

  • Mixed Martial Arts: Quezada, Means are big winners in King of the Cage at Buffalo Thunder

    There is a mantra in the Mixed Martial Arts world, “never leave it in the hands of the judges.”
    The fighters at King of the Cage took that to heart Saturday night at Buffalo Thunder Hotel and Casino. Not once was it required to collect the judges score cards as all of the bouts finished well before their scheduled times.
    A near-capacity crowd filled the venue to cheer on local fighters as they did battle in the octagon. The action was fast paced as the fighters ripped through the card.

    Sod sale will benefit athletic dept.

    Los Alamos High School will be selling sod from Sullivan Field May 20-21.
    Sullivan Field is being renovated and artificial surface will be installed to replace the grass field. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Los Alamos Public Schools Athletic Department.
    Sod will be sold at $.30 per square foot. Sod cuts will be approximately 5 feet by 18 inches.
