  • Community: Sports getting back on track after fire

    Rarely is a wildfire good for grass, but in the case of the Los Alamos Golf Course, the Las Conchas Fire could’ve hardly been more beneficial.
    The fire, which prompted an evacuation of the town two weeks ago when it threatened to get into the townsite, was just what the doctor ordered for the LAGC vegetation, which was struggling to get into its normal summer condition.
    “We were being faced with the worst drought, with the worst wind and with the worst winter. You talk about three strikes,” said LAGC head professional Donnie Torres.
    However, because the course’s normal foot traffic was absent, course crews were able to water just about as much as they wanted to and the holes, particularly the greens, healed up quite well.

  • LAHS athletics: Construction delay could affect home schedule

    It’s been a busy summer for Los Alamos High School athletic director Vicki Nelms.
    Not only has Nelms been away from Los Alamos dealing with personal matters, she found out recently that boys basketball coach Matt King had resigned to take a job in Clovis.
    Now, she may have to navigate potential scheduling change for the upcoming fall 2011 season due to the effects of the Las Conchas Fire, specifically early season home games.
    Currently, both Sullivan Field, which hosts football and boys and girls soccer games, and Griffith Gymnasium, which houses volleyball, are under renovation. Sullivan Field is having a new artificial surface installed, while Griffith Gym is undergoing mostly cosmetic changes to its façade.

  • Running: Pace Racing resumes

    Members of the Atomic City Roadrunners head down the Cañada del Buey Trail in White Rock earlier this season. Tonight, the club’s weekly Pace Race resumes. The race starts at 6 p.m. at Piñon Park in White Rock.

    The Pace Race is the first the Roadrunners have held  since June 21. For more information, call 672-1639.

  • Basketball: Hoops camp starts Monday

    A basketball skills camp is scheduled from July 18-21 at Chamisa Elementary School.
    The camp will be run by Justin Black. It is for players in grades 3-8 and will be held during the afternoon hours.
    Price for participation is $45. Proceeds will benefit Chamisa and Aspen Schools’ physical education programs.

  • Boys basketball: King leaves LA to take job in Clovis

    Matt King, the former head coach of the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team, announced his resignation late last month, just a little over a year after being hired.
    King confirmed he’d stepped down from his post to take over the head coaching job at Clovis High School.
    Los Alamos athletic director Vicki Nelms, who had been in Texas with her family when she got the news about King, said she’d gotten several phone calls and e-mails inquiring about the position almost immediately after she’d posted the head coaching vacancy on the New Mexico Activities Association’s website.

  • Boys basketball: King resigns from LAHS

    Just a little over a year after conducting a search for a new boys basketball head coach, Los Alamos High School will have to conduct another.

    Los Alamos athletic director Vicki Nelms confirmed Wednesday that boys basketball coach Matt King had resigned his post. King will become the new boys head coach at Clovis High School.

    King, whose first head coaching job was with Los Alamos, had stressed commitment to the Hilltopper program as one of his core values, but leaves just a little over 13 months after accepting the job.

  • Sporting events remain on hold

    Things are tenuous for the current schedule of sporting events due to the Las Conchas Fire and ensuing evacuation of the Hill.

    This week’s Pace Race, which was scheduled for today, was canceled Monday night due to the fire. Also Monday, organizers of Los Alamos County’s slowpitch softball league had announced all games would be postponed.

    The Family YMCA of Los Alamos said Tuesday it was closing all of its Los Alamos operations – including its main facility and the Teen Center – until further notice. Should the YMCA remain closed into next week, that could also effect the running of the Y’s Firecrakcer 5K, which is on July 4.

  • Off-season work

    Construction at both Sullivan Field (above) and Griffith Gymnasium continued last week. Crews remain busy readying the two main Los Alamos High School competition venues for play this fall.

    Sullivan Field will be getting a new artificial surface for football and soccer, while the facade of Griffith Gym is being redone.

    Work is expected to be completed around the start of the 2011-12 school year.

  • Sports Update 06-26-11

    First Splash N Dash is Wednesday

    The first Splash N Dash of the season will take place Wednesday starting at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center.
    The Splash N Dash, a free event, is open to the public and is geared toward those training for the Los Alamos Triathlon. Registration for the event is limited to 75 participants.
    Interested participants may sign up at the aquatic center on the day of the event starting at 6:20 p.m. Participants may choose a 400-yard swim and 5K run or a 200-yard swim and 3K run.

    Bumpers registration ends Monday

  • Senior Olympics: Locals headed to National Games

    Los Alamos’ senior athletes will send three representatives to the National Senior Games this month.
    The National Senior Games started June 16 and will continue through the remainder of the month in Houston. The Games include events in 19 athletic categories varying from golf to bowling to triathlon.
    Individuals making the trip to Houston from Los Alamos include Jackie Marr, Inez Ross and Ted Williams.
    To earn their way to nationals, athletes must qualify in both local and statewide events.
    Marr is one of the most accomplished senior swimmers in the country and has numerous records to back it up. This will be Marr’s final year in competing in her current age category, 65-69.
