  • Cycling: Calvert, Park are top finishers at 2011 Tour de LA

    It was again a tight finish in the top Tour de Los Alamos men’s category.
    The Tour de Los Alamos, celebrating its 39th year, was held Sunday on a 27-mile loop course winding from downtown Los Alamos, past the Back Gate, through White Rock and back up the Truck Route.
    Damian Calvert, one of the top cyclists in the state, who was nipped by just one second in the 2010 Tour, came out on top in a photo finish against Ryan Blickem. Calvert and Blickem tied to the hundredth of a second in the men’s pro/1/2/3 divison.
    Calvert, who just a week earlier won the Pajarito Punishment, won his first Tour de Los Alamos since 2007. Calvert’s winning time was 3 hours, 40 minutes, 8 seconds on the three-lap, 81-mile course.

  • Sports Update 06-19-11

    Tour de Los Alamos registration starts at 6:30 a.m.

    The Roadrunners Cycling Club will host the Tour de Los Alamos today.
    The Tour de Los Alamos is a road cycling race for men, women and juniors. The race consists of several distance categories for cyclists of different abilities.
    Price for participation is $45 on race day. All cyclists must have a USA Cycling license and an approved helmet.
    Registrations will be accepted today between 6:30-7:30 a.m. near Ruby K’s.

  • Running: Jablin wins weekly Pace Race

    Jamie Jablin had the best prediction at this week’s Pace Race and tied for the fastest time on the 3-mile course with his twin brother Michael.
    The Pace Race was run Tuesday at American Springs Road in the Jemez Mountains.
    Jablin had just a five-second differential between his predicted and actual finish time Tuesday. Meanwhile, he and Michael Jablin came in step-for-step, both finishing with a time of 20:05.
    The top female finisher on the 3-mile course Tuesday was Katie Gattiker with her time of 33:41.
    On the 1-mile course, Jackie Marr had a 13:42 and Bob Westervelt finished with a 15:16.
    Other top predictors this week included Nathan Romero (13 seconds), Duane Marr (24 seconds) and Daniel Romero and Bob Reedy (34 seconds).

  • Kayaking: Calm waters

    Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center was inundated with kayaks Tuesday evening. Kayakers paddle the pool waters every week through August starting at 7:45 p.m.

    Price for participation is $5. For more information, call the aquatic center at 662-8170.

  • Golf: Results from this week’s senior men’s tournaments

    The players on the Northern New Mexico Senior Men’s Golf Association circuit were busy this week, with three tournaments in a row.
    The NNMSMGA held the tournaments in the Santa Fe area, playing Monday at Las Campanas, Tuesday at Cochiti’s golf course and Wednesday at the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe.
    Some local senior golfers fared relatively well this week. Bob Quick had the top finish among Los Alamos players, earning the first low net in the first flight Monday.
    Tuesday, Jay Boettner of Los Alamos finished with the best gross score in the third flight, while Gary Lind has the lowest gross score in the fourth flight.

  • NMAA: Tripp to resign at end of academic year

    It came as a bit of a shock to Los Alamos High School athletic director Vicki Nelms when she heard.
    Just two weeks earlier, meeting with the top officials from the New Mexico Activities Association, Nelms got no indication that Gary Tripp might be stepping down from his top post.
    However, Tripp, the executive director of the NMAA, the governing body of most interscholastic sports and activities in the state, announced Monday that he will be leaving the association’s top job effective at the end of the 2011-12 academic year.

  • Sports Update 06-15-11

    Pool to host Hawaiian Night

    Piñon Park Pool will host Hawaiian Night tonight.
    The pool will be open to the general public until 10 p.m. Price for participation is $4 for non-pool members or $2 with any food purchase.
    The event will feature an inflatable pool slide. Kenny’s BBQ will be in the pool’s between 5:30-9 p.m. and root beer floats will be sold inside the pool area.

    Splash N Dash season opens June 29

    The first Splash N Dash of the season will take place June 29 starting at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center.

  • Top fencers preparing for more

    Tom Hill and Jack Stafurik have crossed swords more than once. Quite literally.
    The two men are the top two fencers for the Los Alamos Fencing Club and to prepare for events, they often square off against each other.
    Right now, Hill, the coach of LAFC, and Stafurik are the only two fencers who are currently competing at the national level and warm up for tournaments together at the YMCA’s gymnasium.
    Most of the members of LAFC are younger and have only limited experience in actual competition.
    Nevertheless, they feel there’s plenty of potential in the younger fencers they train.

  • Shooters take aim in Sin City

    Shooting stick can be much more than a leisurely activity while downing a few cold ones.
    For some of the top local players, it can mean a trip to the national playoffs.
    That’s what one team from Los Alamos did recently. In May, regulars in the Los Alamos Pool League took a trip to Las Vegas to compete with some of the top shooters in the nation.
    The local team of Mike Cutler, Tony Zukaitis, Brian Appell, John Robertson and Vance Boone took part in the Billiards Congress of American Pool League National Championship, which was held at the Riviera Resort and Casino – all the players but Boone took part in the open individual event as well.

  • Coffelt is one of top officials

    A group of football officials from Los Alamos has been around for quite awhile. It’s been around so long, in fact, that current crew chief Kerry Coffelt remembers it from his playing days.
    The officiating crew has been on the hill since the early 1960s and is still going strong. It’s one of the most respected crews in northern New Mexico and recently had a chance to call the 2011 North-South small school All-Star Game, which was played in Española.
