Lane Saunders reached the 182-pound state wrestling finals Saurday, but was unable to lock up his third title. Saunders squared off with the only wrestler to beat him in the regular season, Belen's Nathaniel Martinez, in the finals. After a scoreless first period, Martinez escaped and took Saunders down in the second period to go up, 3-0.
Saunders escaped from Martinez at the end of the second period. He then chose bottom to start the third period and escaped again to cut Martinez's lead to 3-2. With time running low, Saunders got deep in a shot, but couldn't finish the takedown before the final whistle.
