    Honoring the past, highlighting the future - The Rosenfest Lectures will be held May 18-20 at historic Fuller Lodge.
    Rosenfest presents a series of lectures in honor of Louis Rosen, the Father of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), the signature science facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
    From Manhattan Project to MaRIE: Rosenfest will cover Rosen’s early life, career, and influence at Los Alamos and on nuclear science and international relations.

  • Speak before it is too late

    Some claim that roundabouts are much safer than current highway designs and push that we need them and bike lanes on Trinity Drive.
    I analyzed the traffic-load impact on the entire town, not just Trinity Drive, with regard to traffic redistribution and safety, if Trinity is changed from four to two lanes, using information I requested of and obtained from the Los Alamos County  traffic engineer and police department or drew from the CDM study.

    The long awaited Robert J. Oppenheimer and Leslie Groves statues are set to be dedicated at Fuller Lodge during a special ceremony in May.

    Overheard in the Quark Room at Central Avenue Grill: Los Alamos has more ultramarathon athletes per capita  than any U.S. town. An ultramarathon is typically 50-100 miles long.

    Many business owners remain unsure how to market their companies online, even though they know that today’s consumers use the Internet to research products and decide what and where to buy.

    We need a new State Question. Instead of, “Red or Green?” it should be, “How’re we gonna pay for that?”

    Word on the street says that the Army Corps of Engineers has discovered a wetland in the bottom of the Los Alamos Reservoir. 

    Now the wetland must be created elsewhere.

    It must just go with the territory. Los Alamos is home to some of the most complex and exciting scientific discoveries the world has ever known. That complexity and innate desire to study things without question extends to county government.

    Cats survive standoff   
    The seven cats found inside Richard Morse’s Bathtub Row home following his recent 19-hour standoff with police are in shelter care.
    Several of the cats were ill and have undergone treatment by a local veterinarian.
    The county is repairing the chain link fence surrounding the home that was damaged in the standoff.
    Morse was transported to a hospital in Las Vegas, N.M. for a psychological evaluation.

    My friend’s life was dominated by her mentally ill son.
    He was schizophrenic and had dangerous delusions. He would be committed to the New Mexico State Hospital in Las Vegas for six months at a time, but could not be kept longer than that due to laws intended to safeguard the freedoms of the mentally ill.
    She worried about him in the hospital because of the living conditions, but she worried about him much more when he was free.

    Judge renders sentence
    A Bernalillo County judge sentenced Los Alamos firefighter Brandon Gore to six months of probation. Following successful completion, the indecent exposure charge will be removed from his record.
          
    Charles Lujan retires
    Ofc. Charles Lujan retired today from the LAPD after more than 20 years of service, most recently as chief of animal control. He chose to retire quietly without any fanfare.

  • Lamonitor.com moves to subscriber-...

    In less than a week, the Los Alamos Monitor’s online counterpart, lamonitor.com, will become a subscription-based news and information site.
    Beginning Feb. 1, all of the print newspaper’s valued subscribers will have full access to all of the news and features currently in the print product, plus a number of online-only features such as video, slideshows, reader forums, comments and the full online community that the Website is becoming.

    Owners Liz and Bob  Carlson have sold Bob’s Bodacious BBQ in the Hilltop Shopping Center on Arkansas Street to Pam and Frank Good of Florida.  
               
    LA to get more cultural
    Members from the Cultural Planning Group are concluding three days of meetings with local art organizations and anticipate creating a local cultural plan by late February.

     Word is that the outside investigation into pornography allegedly downloaded from county computers at the Los Alamos Fire Department should conclude today.

    Clerk becoming fulltime?
    We have heard that a move is underway to switch the Los Alamos County Clerk post to a fulltime, salaried position. Stay tuned for updates.

  • Enough with the earmarks

    The federal budget  practice of “earmarking” – or “pork spending” as it is known colloquially – has exploded during the last 15 years. Earmarks are line items in spending bills inserted by legislators for specific projects in their home states.
    Some infamous earmarks funded a $50 million indoor rain forest in Iowa and a $223 million “bridge to nowhere” in Alaska. Earmarks can provide recipients with federal grant money, contracts, loans, or other types of benefits.

    New bistro on horizon
    We have heard that a trendy new bistro complete with full bar and wood fired pizza is going to open in town. Our sources tell us that “Dixie Girl,” named after business woman Denise Lane who hails from the South, is on target to open   in the old Magistrate Court location behind Hill Diner in the spring.
