RIO RANCHO, N.M. (AP) — A memorial service is planned for a Sandoval County sheriff's sergeant who died after being struck by a vehicle during a snow storm.
Family, friends and law enforcement officers from the area will be gathering Thursday at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho for a memorial service to honor Sgt. Robert Baron.
Police say a funeral escort will travel through Rio Rancho, stopping traffic along the way.
Baron was struck Dec. 5 while directing traffic along Interstate 25 near San Felipe Pueblo. He was initially listed in critical condition when he was transported to the hospital. He died the next day.
The 47-year-old Baron had been with the sheriff's department for seven years. He is survived by his wife and 10-year-old son.
