The battle for the early edge in the District 2-5A girls basketball race is set for tonight.
Los Alamos will host the Española Valley Sundevils at 7 p.m. today at Griffith Gymnasium.
The two teams are both ranked in the top 5 in Class 5A, according to MaxPreps.com. Moreover, the two teams have been tabbed as the front-runners in 2-5A since the start of the district season.
Following Los Alamos’ win Friday night over the Las Vegas Robertson Cardinals, head coach Nestor Trujillo said his approach to tonight’s game wouldn’t be any different than any other game.
Los Alamos, which currently has the best record in the classification at 17-2, didn’t look sharp Friday night, however. Its offense, one of the most productive in the state for most of the season, was hampered by Robertson’s 2-3 zone.
Fortunately for the Hilltoppers, their top shooter from the perimeter, Amber Logan, had a big game. Logan hit 4 3-pointers in the first half, then hit another 3-pointer and two key free throws to finally seal the win.
As for Española Valley (15-2), it won its 2-5A opener with a win over the only other team expected to give the Sundevils or Hilltoppers a run for their money, the Del Norte Knights.
