Letters

  • Issue continues to divide

    Dear Editor,

I’m tires of sending letters to the editor, but I must take strong disagreement with George Chandler’s dismissal of the Monitor editorial criticizing Ken Milder on the skate park referendum rejection.

His dismissal of the editorial as “ignorant” by a putative civics New Mexico 101 lesson and some self congratulatory words about how well government functions here struck me to use another term common in political discussion today: “out of touch.”

  • Thanks for Obama coverage

    Dear Editor,

Thank you for covering the attendance (Aug. 29) of Los Alamos citizens at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. There were two big and very loud seating sections filled with New Mexicans on Thursday for Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at Mile High Stadium. Our “Los Alamos for Obama” banner was made by Lee Eakins and signed by many Los Alamos supporters.

  • Los Alamos bicycle unfriendly

    Dear Editor,

Having just finished reading an article on bicycle-friendly communities worldwide that are experiencing a boom in bicycle use (Albuquerque Journal/ Journal North 8/31/08), I am both green with envy and red with anger – and I’m not talking chile here.

  • Council action disappointing

    Dear Editor,

I and many other Los Alamos residents were very disappointed in our County Council members’ actions at the council meeting in White Rock Tuesday, Aug. 19. Council members, with the exception of Nona Bowman, apparently came to the meeting to discuss a previously announced agenda item with closed minds, having already decided how they would vote. Some even presented statements written prior to hearing the discussion and testimonies that citizens gave.

  • Monitor anti-Milder, ignorant

    Dear Editor,

I take strong issue with your editorial excoriating Ken Milder in Sunday’s Monitor. At the fateful skate park hearing Ken was the councilor who chose to discuss seriously the role of elected officials in a representative democracy. It is an issue that arises anew every few years when particularly controversial questions come before the council. Ken addressed it thoroughly and demonstrated understanding of the problem. Your editorial did not.

  • McCain a hypocrite

    Dear Editor,

John McCain made a huge mistake: he marginalized Paris Hilton. Now in her Funny or Die video (http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/64ad536a6d) Paris exploited the opening as only she could do, and showed McCain and the Republicans for the elitist snobs they are.

  • Is future evolution possible?

    Dear Editor,

Is there time enough? For more than 60 years IT, the bomb, kept the peace. This is the mantra of the hardheaded, strong, patriotic, macho men who rule our world.

The peacemakers may be blessed but peace is a dirty word. Peace people are decried as soft-headed and weak. There is no strength in weakness. However, there is wisdom in peace. Good families are respectful of one another and others. There is love. So it should be among nations.

  • To the men of Los Alamos

    Dear Editor,

This letter is organized in two sections. The first addresses the young men. The second is to the men who teach them.

    To the young men:

I was out this morning and decided to jog around Ashley pond. After a lap, I got tried of seeing all the trash. So, I started to pick it up. On the second lap, I noticed a condom wrapper, then a condom, then another. Here is the story that unfolds in my head.

  • Council ignores many of us

    Dear Editor,

The skate park discussion has been revealing.  Our County Council continues to be convinced that it has been anointed by God as the bearer of truth to the multitudes and should not be questioned.  In 10 years, when this county’s population has decreased substantially due to decreased funding at the lab and the major economic projects initiated under this Council’s guidance are failing due to lack of customers, we will see by whom they were anointed.

  • What did he say?

    Dear Editor,

Several quotes in a recent Monitor made no sense and are worthy of comment.

First of all, the lead article concerning County Council’s decision to go forward with the Skate park.

Councilman (Mike) Wheeler: “We can’t find a reason not to put it where it’s located now.”

WHAT? In the very same article there are several reasonable reasons not to put it there.
