  • New govs take office amid historic budget crisis

    NEW YORK (AP) — New York's incoming governor, Democrat Andrew Cuomo, says he won't raise taxes even though he will inherit a budget deficit of at least $9 billion when he takes office in January. Ohio Republican Gov.-elect John Kasich is promising to cut taxes, despite a shortfall of about $8 billion.

  • Incoming majority speaks out

    Four members of the current Los Alamos County Council leave office Dec. 31. Nona Bowman and Michael Wheeler are term limiting out. Robert Gibson opted not to seek reelection and appointed Councilor Ralph Phelps lost his election bid in the primary.
    While their replacements will make up a majority on the seven-member council in just two weeks, the current council’s decision to terminate County Administrator Tony Mortillaro last Tuesday evening has raised questions.

  • LANL has a record cleanup this year

    Los Alamos National Laboratory finished 12 months worth of environmental cleanup by breaking LANL records in several areas as fiscal year 2010 ended.  
    Los Alamos personnel conducted more field investigations and cleanup campaigns than ever and completed a record number of lab shipments to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).

  • County poised to move on muni building

    In its last official meeting before new councilors step in come January, the Los Alamos County Council is poised to award a $19.5 million design-build contract for a new municipal building on Central Avenue.

    The council received an amended agenda last week that includes the proposed contract award for Jaynes Corporation in the amount of $19,536,868, along with the establishment of a municipal building project budget of $25,800,873.

  • Nonpotable water packs a punch

    Nonpotable water doesn’t impact a large number of people so some might just shrug at the recommended 15-cent rate increase for water that is only used for irrigation.
    However, with the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area working to provide machine-made snow next year, nonpotable water may pack more of punch than originally thought.

    Communications Team seeking nominations

    Citizens interested in applying for the new Communications Team that will help Los Alamos County government implement its Communications Plan still have time to submit a letter of interest to the county administrator.
    The deadline is 5 p.m. Monday.
    The county is seeking at least four citizens who will join four county staff members.

    No trash pick-up on Christmas Eve

    Los Alamos County announced it will not have trash pick-up on Dec. 24.

  • Community gears up for 2010 Assets Awards

    The time of year has come again to identify those people in the Los Alamos community that make a difference, every day.
    The second annual Community Asset Awards, coordinated by Assets In Action with the help of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board and the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce, have plans underway to celebrate the community heroes for 2010.
    The project seeks to recognize community contributions through the efforts of youth, adults, senior citizens, businesses, clubs and organizations.
