    Los Alamos National Laboratory announced it will close at 2 p.m. today because of the winter storm.

  • Storm moves into N.M.

    A moist upper-level storm system gathering strength over the Lower Colorado River Valley of Arizona/southeast California and points south Tuesday evening will slowly progress eastward overnight into early Wednesday, eventually crossing New Mexico Wednesday Night into early Thursday.  

    Valley rain and mountain snow will develop across much of south-central and southwest New Mexico between midnight and daybreak Wednesday,  before spreading northward into Central and Northern New Mexico during the afternoon Wednesday.

  • Public comment: Make us a national park

    Los Alamos residents embraced the idea of a Manhattan Project National Historical Park during a day that that included a series of public meetings related the National Park Service.

    Although Los Alamos was recognized in a study by the federal agency as the one place that could provide a central location for telling the story of the making of the first atomic weapons, residents and elected officials urged the Park Service to include Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tenn., two other locations under consideration in the historical unit.

  • College mil levy bid loses big

    Without foreseeing the nation’s economic downturn and the 36 percent tax hike local property owners would be hit with in November, the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos agreed to wait a year and let Los Alamos Public Schools hold its bond election last year.

    “It’s true, no one had a crystal ball then. But we know in due time, in a year or two, the economy will come around and we’ll come back to the voters,” UNM-LA Executive Director Cedric Page said this morning.

  • Domenici adds a spice to the race

    SANTA FE — And the gubernatorial race is in full swing. With the somewhat surprising entry of Pete Domenici, Jr., candidates for governor moved into full campaign mode.

    The four Republican candidates already in the race were reported to be none too pleased with the development, and even presumed Democratic nominee, Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, took a shot saying we can’t afford a governor who has a name but no ideas.

    Los Alamos County announced that the Charter Review Public Forum scheduled for 7 p.m. today at Fuller Lodge is canceled due to the winter storm.

    The meeting has been rescheduled for 5 p.m., Feb. 17 at Fuller Lodge.
