  • Audtions for ‘Beauty and the Beast Jr.’

    Atomic City Children’s Theater (ACCT), the Los Alamos Public Schools’ after-school theater program is very excited to announce that auditions for Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” will be held Wednesday and Thursday in the Barranca Mesa Elementary School gym.
    The auditions will be held from 4-6 p.m. both days and are open to any fourth-, fifth- or sixth- grade student from the Los Alamos or White Rock areas. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Barranca Mesa main lobby.

  • Let ‘Phantom of the Opera’ entrance you

    Monster Movie Wednesdays will continue at UNM-Los Alamos on Wedesday with “Phantom of the Opera” (1925, 79 minutes, black and white).
    Films are shown at 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings in the UNM-LA Lecture Hall in Building 2.
    The series is free and open to the public. A brief introduction to the films will be given and lively discussions always follow the movie.
    “Phantom of the Opera” starring Lon Chaney and directed by Rupert Julian, is a version of the 1910 novel written by Gaston Leroux.

  • Spaces for flea market and craft fair still available

     Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Canyon Road will have a Craft Fair and Flea Market from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The indoor craft fair will include vendors from throughout the area selling everything from jewelry to candles and fall wreaths.
    The flea market outside will have all the thrill of yard sale shopping for treasures but in one convenient location. Indoor tables are still available for $25 and outdoor spaces for $20.

     

  • US in last-ditch attempt to save Mideast talks

    RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Frustrated by a new impasse, the White House sent its Mideast envoy to the region Tuesday in a last-ditch attempt to prevent the collapse of peace talks over Israel's decision to allow new construction in West Bank settlements.

    Israel refuses to renew a 10-month-old moratorium on housing starts that expired over the weekend, while the Palestinians say there's no point in negotiating if settlements keep expanding on lands they want for their state.

  • Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper up for Rock Hall of Fame

    NEW YORK (AP) — It could be a blaze of glory for Bon Jovi at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

    The Jersey boys are up for possible induction in the hallowed hall, along with first-timers Donovan, Dr. John, Alice Cooper and Neil Diamond.

  • Golf: Woods says he's ready for Ryder Cup challenge

    NEWPORT, Wales (AP) — The Ryder Cup is getting personal for Tiger Woods.

    Interrupting an otherwise dull press conference Tuesday, Woods fired back at a comment Rory McIlroy made six weeks ago that "I would love to face" the world's No. 1 player in the Ryder Cup unless his game rapidly improved.

    The Los Alamos Piecemakers Quilt Guild will have a potluck for their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the United Church of Los Alamos.  In addition to the potluck, a group of quilters will present quilts that were created by using various fabric art techniques to replicate a number of posters.

  • ‘Let Me In’ premiers in Los Alamos

    The Overture film, “Let Me In” premiers at the Reel Deal Theater on Friday with two showings; one at 6:50 p.m. and the other at 9:15 p.m.
    Los Alamos County will co-sponsor a “red carpet” premiere with the Reel Deal for “Let Me In,” which will features prizes and special giveaways.
