  • Review: 'Little Shop' a great, big hit

Whether you love the movie or have never even heard of Rick Moranis, the Olions’ production of “Little Shop of Horrors” will have you laughing the antics, caring about the characters and applauding wildly, standing in front of your Duane W. Smith seat.

I enjoyed so many elements of the musical I almost don’t know where to begin. But, since it is “Little Shop of Horrors,” I’ll start with the plant.

    The plant is awesome.

  • Caldera to lose executive director

Jeffrey Cross will be leaving his position as executive director of the Valles Caldera Trust June 21.

The trust chair Bill Kelleher announced Monday that Cross was accepting a position at the National Park Service as chief of the Ocean and Coastal Resources office.

Cross is the third executive director in six years at the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

The press release said the Park Service recruited Cross. He has a Ph.D. in marine fisheries and 20 years of experience working in the field, before taking a position at the Grand Canyon National Park.

  • $20M for White Rock?

Chief Financial Officer Steven Lynne came to the Los Alamos County Council meeting Monday with a request to spend $1 million over two years on design work for the White Rock Economic Development plan, and left with a directive to find $20 million to fund construction as soon as possible.

Councilor Ken Milder said that if only design work were funded, it would signal that the county was not serious and might not get many bids.

  • Pion School gets greenery

It started out as the annual spring barbecue for the Pion Elementary Arbor Day but when the event concluded, much more was accomplished than just eating lunch.

Melanie McKinley, of the Pion Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization, said in addition to the barbecue, which Cub Scout Pack 326 cooked, students and about 60 parents got their hands dirty and the campus beautiful.

  • Thinking Makes It So: A rat for a day

In a foreign country, with a tour group full of people you don’t know, sometimes the best thing you can do is go to the gym.

I need to pause for a disclaimer: If I am a rat of any kind, it is not a gym rat. I’m a road rat, a trail rat, a barre rat – but I don’t like the machines, the musk, the towels, the TVs or any of the complimentary ambience that comes along with a trip to the gym. I can’t stand the sound of the treadmill, the way my face looks in the mirror while I run or the useless, tiny cups of water.

  • Spotlight on Los Alamos: Greeting visitors from around the world

Cindy Whiting’s welcoming smile greets local guests and those from across the globe who stop by the Visitor’s Center inside the Chamber of Commerce at 15th and Central Avenue. For seven years, Whiting has shared points of interest and promoted the community through her job as receptionist for the Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation.

“On a typical spring day I can talk with 40 people,” she said. “I especially enjoy talking with Europeans because of my ancestry and interest in foreign languages.”

  • Congressional hopeful says he knows the ropes

He counts 10 years’ experience in Congress working with Sen. Pete Domenici and a 68-percent majority of the vote from the Republican pre-nominating convention in March.

Santa Fe lawyer Marco Gonzalez has some definite ideas about how his staff’s work in Washington can help fill at least one of the holes in New Mexico’s congressional delegation next year.

  • Tennis: Toppers sweep District 2-4A team titles

TAOS — Neither of the Los Alamos Hilltopper tennis teams could be entering the postseason on a much higher note than they are.

Both teams won big at this weekend’s District 2AAAA team and individual tournaments, which were held at the Quail Ridge Inn Friday and Saturday.

Los Alamos knocked off Taos in both boys and girls competition Saturday, winning the team tournament and securing a spot in the state Class AAAA tournament which gets going Friday in Albuquerque.
