  • LAHS Athletics: Topper athletes, coaches honored

    Jeremy Kasik and Margaret Wood received the highest student-athlete honor awarded by Los Alamos High School at Thursday night’s All-Sports Award Ceremony.

    Kasik, a football and baseball player for Los Alamos, and Wood, a top cross country and track athlete, were named the 2008 Clendenen Award winners at Thursday’s ceremony, held at Duane W. Smith Auditorium.

    The annual award is given to outstanding graduating student-athletes that excelled in both the classroom and the playing field. Athletes are nominated by head coaches of varsity sports at LAHS.

  • Track and Field: Throwing it all away

    ALBUQUERQUE — It wasn’t supposed to go down this way.

    The Class AAAA boys javelin competition wasn’t supposed to be much more than a formality. No one in the state had come within five feet of Ruben Martinez’s best toss of the modern day Roman spear.

    Yet, after the first throw, Martinez was the one playing catch-up.

  • Casa Mesita on track to regain active status

    The Casa Mesita Group Home will be turning on the lights again and Los Alamos Family Council is also getting some needed help for the remainder of the year from a statewide funding source.

    Officials from ValueOptions New Mexico presented a $100,000 check to Casa Mesita to support the organizations campaign to resume operations, perhaps as early as this summer.

    Also on Wednesday, A $9,500 check went to Los Alamos Family Council.

  • LAPS approves 2008-2009 budget

    The Los Alamos Public School Board of Education approved the 2008-2009 budget, citing concerns over decreased enrollment and discussing ways to relieve increased costs for food services during its special board meeting Thursday.

    In an attempt to make up strong financial losses caused by rising insurance rates and a drop in enrollment, School Board President Steve Girrens and other board members suggested “opening the doors” to out of district students.

  • Diamond in the rough

    Focused efforts are underway to minimize the impact Diamond Drive Phase II has on area businesses, commuters, bicyclists and pedestrians. Council voted 6-to-1 Tuesday in favor of retaining a split-phased traffic signal at the intersection of Diamond Drive / Arkansas Avenue / 38th Street while road construction affects the area’s ebb and flow.

    Council Vice Chair Robert Gibson voted against the motion.

  • IHMC pilgrims prepare for World Youth Day

    World Youth Day is a touching experience for those have participated in the event.

    Toni Rogers, a volunteer at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and a participant of World Youth Day when it was held in Denver, remembers young people cheering for the Pope like he was a rock star and a group of cardinals doing the wave in the auditorium stands.

    “It’s really, really touching,” Rogers said. “It’s a lot of prayer and sharing with each other about their faith.”

    She added, “It really, really made a lasting impact.”

  • OUR VIEW: Monday is for more than picnics

    Monday is Memorial Day. It is so much more than a day off from work to picnic with the family and kick-off the summer season. It carries even greater meaning during a time of war like we are experiencing right now.

    Over the past months a sizable number of American soldiers have died in service to their country. Memorial Day is a special day set aside for all of us to remember and memorialize the soldiers of many generations who have given their lives so that we are free to enjoy our picnics and trips to the amusement parks.

    These men and women must be remembered.

  • OFF AND ON: Oil, gas revenues helping avoid budget problems

    While higher fuel prices hurt consumers – and the state highway fund – they are helping the rest of state government avoid a budget squeeze this year.

    This is despite a slowdown in the state's economy and an expected dip in certain tax collections, the Associated Press reported.

    The high revenues from oil and natural gas production are serving as a financial safety net for the state.

  • Ready to start out on their own

    Senior Hilltoppers have been busy this week practicing their hat toss.

    Two hundred and fifty-three Los Alamos High School students are scheduled to receive their diploma at 9 a.m. Saturday in Griffith Gym, to mark the end of their high school careers.

    “The minute I get my diploma my heart will be completely full – I’m going to be jumping up and down,” LAHS senior Craig Girrens said. “It took a little while to sink in, but I’m trying to make the best out of every moment.”
