  • If walls could talk....

    Local writers spotlight a piece of history that is right in our downtown area. Craig Martin and Heather McClenahan address the artifacts from another era in their book, “Of Logs and Stone: The Buildings of the Los Alamos Ranch School and Bathtub Row.”

    The Los Alamos Historical Museum will host a book-signing event for the authors from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday.

    The book features the history of and stories about the oldest buildings in Los Alamos—Fuller Lodge and the smaller structures in the downtown National Landmark District.

  • Keeping it short and sweet

    If anyone needs a lesson about how to write anything from an essay to a script “short and sweet,” they should turn to Los Alamos Little Theater (LALT) for some guidance. After viewing the community theater’s latest production, “8x10 Again,” it is clear they are the masters at making the most out of a short amount of time.

    Eight plays are featured in the short play festival but the catch is all of them are only 10-minutes long.

  • Girls soccer: LA gets shut out at Academy, 2-0

    If Los Alamos’ girls soccer team wants to make a run in the state Class AAAA playoffs, head coach Jiri Kubicek said it will need to make more plays than it did Tuesday.

    Los Alamos had plenty of chances to take a lead in the first half, then another two chances to get back into the game late in the second half. But for all those chance, the Hilltoppers came up empty.

    Albuquerque Academy picked up a big win at home over the Hilltoppers Tuesday, winning an important nondistrict Class AAAA game 2-0. Academy’s Chargers picked up goals in each half to earn the victory.

  • Volleyball: Toppers stun Horsemen on road

    SANTA FE — Perez-Shelley Gymnasium hasn’t exactly been home away from home for the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team.

    More often than not, the storied gym smack-dab in the middle of the main building on St. Michael’s campus has been unwelcoming to the Hilltoppers, as has its primary resident, the Horsemen volleyball team.

    Not so much Tuesday night, however.

  • Boys soccer: LA scores 3 quick goals in win

    A week earlier, the St. Michael’s Horsemen took a big lead at the half over the Los Alamos Hilltoppers in a boys soccer contest.

    It was a lead the Horsemen very nearly squandered.

    The Hilltoppers didn’t want that to happen to them Tuesday.

    Los Alamos jumped out to an unexpected 3-0 lead in the first half over the dangerous Albuquerque Academy Chargers at Sullivan Field, taking advantage of the Chargers’ defensive struggles to clear the ball.

  • L.A. County shows generosity with $25k gift

    It’s not every day that a city celebrates its 400th anniversary, but in 2010, Santa Fe will be doing just that.

    So what sort of gift should one get for a city that seems to have it all?

    Los Alamos County Councilors have decided that a sculpture would be the perfect birthday gift for the City Different and have begun taking steps towards purchasing it.

  • Clark named managing editor of the Monitor

    Carol A. Clark has been promoted to managing editor of the Los Alamos Monitor.

    "This promotion reflects the expanded responsibilities Carol has taken on at the Monitor," Publisher Ralph Damiani said. "Her strong news sense and leadership abilities will be an asset in her new role here at the paper."

  • Facility reaches halfway on first phase

    The Applicants and Interested Parties went another round Tuesday night on the matter of building the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement (CMRR) facility.

    The Applicants are the Department of Energy and the managers of Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    Lab officials reported they were about 50 percent finished with the first phase of the project, the $164 million Radiological Laboratory/Utility Office Building (RLUOB).

  • Get on the move

    The local YMCA hopes that they can inspire Los Alamos residents to get on their feet this weekend to kick off America on the Move Week.

    America on the Move Week will be held Saturday through Sept. 27, with a goal to surpass the number of footsteps participants logged in 2007 by 20 million.

    “All you have to do to participate in this event is come into the YMCA or the Teen Center in Espaola and sign up to participate and you’ll receive a free pedometer,” said Melanie Chapman, YMCA fitness director.
