  • Minimizing outages priority for utilities

    Over the next four years, Los Alamos County will be fitted for a new electrical backbone.

    In an effort to reduce the impact of power outages and replace aging equipment, the department of public utilities conducted a condition assessment of the electric distribution system in 2006, from which a prioritization scheme was developed to begin renewing the electrical infrastructure in Los Alamos.

  • Airport Basin OK'd for lift off

    An amendment to Los Alamos County’s Airport Basin services agreement with Hensel Phelps Construction New Mexico, LLC was approved unanimously by County Council Tuesday evening. The amendment authorizes Hensel Phelps to move forward with the site work associated with the project.

    Prior to the vote, Public Works Director Kyle Zimmerman presented council with an executive summary, comparison spreadsheet, budget and cost comparisons for the $14 million Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP).

  • Abate to bring bebop back to the Hill

    He seems to like us and we definitely like him.

    Greg Abate (pronounced “Ah-bot-tay”) has been to the Hill a number of times, drawing enthusiast jazz fans from all over the mesas. He returns at 7 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Central Avenue and Main Street, under the auspices of the Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series.

  • Council stands alone - so far

    Los Alamos County Council adopted an ordinance unanimously Tuesday for a County Regional Transit gross receipts tax and another for an election to allow voters to decide that tax.

    “I just got back from Canada where gas is $6 a gallon,” Councilor Nona Bowman said. “So I think more people here will need public transportation if we are to be successful at all in our state.”

  • House panel hears weapons proposal

    House appropriators were expected to adopt a subcommittee report that dealt several zeros to Los Alamos National Laboratory in next year’s budget.

    The House Appropriation Committee this morning considered a proposed energy and water bill that added $2.4 billion to the current budget and $2.1 to the president’s budget request for energy and water, while prescribing significant reductions in nuclear weapons programs.

  • Correction

    A clerical error at the Rio Arriba Magistrate Court led to an error in Friday’s Police Beat, which reported that Justin Chavez, 22, of Chimay was arrested June 10 near 15th Street on a Magistrate Court warrant for failure to appear in court. While Chavez was arrested, the court has since admitted the bench warrant should have been issued to Justin Chavez of Hernandez. The court apologized for the error and for causing Justin Chavez – of Chimay – to be held for more than three hours by the police.

  • Four governors together make history

    ALBUQUERQUE — Govs. Bill Richardson, Bruce King, Toney Anaya and Jerry Apodaca made history Tuesday when they got together for a Democratic Party unity event.

    “Democrats are coming together like never before,” said New Mexico Democratic Party Chairman Brian Colon. “This is the first time all four governors are together and it’s because they all agree it’s time for Democrats to come together. They represent nearly three decades of New Mexico governors and represent almost 30 percent of all of our governors.”

    Riding in style

    My wife and I paid our first visit to Los Alamos last year. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, the scenery was wonderful and the people were very friendly. The only downside was the lack of public transport, which meant we were dependent on our son to take us wherever we wanted to go.
