  • Girrens replaces Waterman on GOP council ticket -- updated

    The Los Alamos County Republican Party Central Committee met Thursday to choose a replacement for Roger Waterman, who withdrew from the race for county council July 23.

    Longtime Los Alamos County resident Steven Girrens was the unanimous choice. Girrens is married to current council chair Sharon Stover. Stover, along with Councilor Mike Wismer, decided not to run for reelection.

    SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico taxpayers shelled out nearly $8 million for the politically divisive, once-a-decade task of drawing new district boundaries for the Legislature, Congress and other elected offices, according to state records.

    The expenses exceeded the nearly $7 million in total adjusted for inflation costs for redistricting after the 2000 census. Actual costs were $5.2 million at the time.

  • Nomads play Friday at DNCU

    Familiarity can breed a great time when it comes to the Los Alamos rock band Eddy and the Nomads. The band plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Del Norte Credit Union. Sponsors of the Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series are presenting the free concert.
    The Nomads have been playing Los Alamos concerts for about 30 years. Members have come and gone except for Wilfred Romero, a founding member. Eddy Partridge joined a few years later. The band’s name changed to Eddy and the Nomads a few years ago, when they discovered that “Nomads” had way too many listings on the web. Eddy and Wilfred play lead and rhythm guitars. Bob Carmen is the bassist and Ringo Davey is the drummer.

     The Mesa Public Library Film Series presents “I Am Love,” starring Tilda Swinton, at 6:30 p.m. This will be the final movie of the Foreign Film Series.

    The August meeting of the Los Alamos Master Gardeners will be at 7 p.m. in the Community Building training room.

    Pre-registration for exhibits in the Los Alamos County Fair will be accepted through today.   • Gadbois to create mural

    The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos has commissioned Santa Fe artist Nick Gadbois to create a work of art for the UNM-LA campus.
    The Local Selection Committee at UNM-LA sought to commission a work that would connect the campus and the Los Alamos community as well as conceptually relate to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
    Finalists were selected in March 2012 and a final selection was made in July. Budget for the project is $57,000. Installation will be completed during fall 2013.

  • Practice makes perfect

    Members of the Los Alamos High School marching band took part in drills this morning at the practice field near Sullivan Field and UNM-LA. They are preparing for the upcoming LAHS football season. The first LAHS home game is scheduled for Aug. 31.

    Pancake breakfast

    There will be a pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. Sunday at the Posse Lodge, benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association. The cost is $7 per person.
