  • Triathlon: Boulder pair rolls to men's, women's titles

    Following his win in the 2008 Los Alamos Triathlon, men’s overall winner Jimmy Archer hung around and waited for his girlfriend to show up.

    He had to wait less than 10 minutes until she crossed the finish line.

    Archer and significant other Kristen Peterson took the men’s and women’s overall championship at the 34th annual triathlon, held Saturday.

  • United Way's

    With the need greater than ever, United Way of Northern New Mexico, serving Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties, is kicking off its “People Matter” 2009 Campaign Wednesday. The event is set to take place from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Los Alamos National Bank lobby at 1200 Trinity Drive.

    “Our mission is to engage human and financial resources to improve the quality of life of the people in the communities we serve in Northern New Mexico,” Executive Director Donna Schroeder said.

    Monitor Publisher Ralph Damiani is chairing the campaign.

  • Domenici honored at foundation banquet

    OHKAY OWINGEH PUEBLO – The grand banquet room at Ohkay Casino Resort and Hotel was sold out Friday night, thanks to a big name and a worthy cause.

    “I truly don’t deserve it,” Sen. Pete Domenici said near the end of an outpouring of gratitude from an evening of tributes. “But I might as well acknowledge it.”

    Continuing on to his coming retirement, Domenici was the honored guest at the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation’s 12th Annual Banquet, a fund-raiser for a newly endowed scholarship fund in the senator’s name.

  • Skate Park hits legal snag with appeal

    The skate park and its proposed location site near Mesa Public Library have been topics of interest for many Los Alamos residents in recent months. While it seems that Los Alamos youth want the skate park downtown, some residents like Jack and Colleen Hanlon would like to see it located somewhere other than the library site.

    In an effort to get County Council to reconsider the location, the Hanlons filed a Notice of Administrative Appeals in First Judicial District Court on Aug. 8.

  • Special Session begins strangely

    SANTA FE — The second session of the 48th Legislature called by Gov. Bill Richardson convened about 12:30 p.m. Friday and recessed a short time later. Democratic Legislators left the floor to caucus and the House reconvened later in the day.

    “We caucused in the morning,” said Republican Rep. Jeannette Wallace, Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Sandoval counties, “so we sat around and waited for them to finish. We’re not moving very fast, we didn’t start at noon, there were no proclamations and no bills – it was a strange beginning.”

  • Wilson appointed to the General Staff of MOWW

    At the Annual Convention of The Military Order of the World Wars, Commander of Los Alamos’ Major General Franklin E. Miles Chapter 229, United States Air Force Lt. Col. (Retired) Norman G. Wilson, was appointed General Staff Officer and to Chair the MOWW’s National Homeland Security Committee.

    The convention, the 88th annual for the MOWW, was held in Columbus, Ga., July 30-Aug. 2.

    The regular monthly dinner meeting of the Major General Franklin E. Miles Chapter 229 of the MOWW will be Aug. 19, at the Aspen Ridge Lodge.

  • Cancer Services provides help in hard times

    Cancer is something Blaire Larson knows about personally.

    Her father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer and even though her husband is part of the medical research at the University of New Mexico Health Center, it was still an overwhelming experience for them both.

    It was a hard time for them, but it seemed even harder for her mother-in-law, Larson said. There were not a lot of resources available.

    Larson said she thought if it was overwhelming for them, what must it be like for other families? As a result, Cancer Services of New Mexico was born.

  • Mountaineers hosting talk on cave adventures

    The Los Alamos Mountaineers on Wednesday evening will host long-time cavers Brian Kendrick and James Hunter as they share their incredible photographs of and exciting adventures in some of the most spectacular caves in the world.

    Brian Kendrick has been actively caving for over seven years primarily in New Mexico with a few caving trips to Colorado, Arizona, and the Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia (TAG) areas.

    Middle school tennis meeting is Thursday

    A Los Alamos Middle School tennis organizational meeting is scheduled for Thursday.

    The meeting is for all interested tennis players in grades 6-8. It will be held at 5 p.m. at the Los Alamos High School tennis courts behind Sullivan Field.

  • Marr sets U.S. records at Nationals

    How is Jackie Marr’s appearance at the United States Long Course Nationals going?

    Not bad, considering she set two United States records in one race.

    Marr has set three new U.S. age group records in two events so far, including setting a new 400-meter freestyle record with her split in the 800-meter freestyle.

    Marr, a Los Alamos master swimmer, has won both her events at Nationals, being held in Portland, Ore., including her 400 individual medley swim Friday morning.
