  • Anti-bullying program targets local schools

    The Crisis Center of Northern New Mexico will be implementing an Anti-Bully Program at Los Alamos Middle School and will continue to reach the elementary schools in Española this school year.

  • Legislators ponder lab's economic future

    ESPAÑOLA – The co-chairman of a state legislative committee said he was interested in how the committee could help continue the “vibrant existence” and “vital economic force” of Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    Sen. Phil Griego, D-Los Alamos, Mora, San Miguel, Santa Fe and Taos, is co-chair of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Legislative Oversight Committee. Last year, he found himself and others on the committee taken by surprise by the news that LANL’s funding appeared to be facing deep cuts in Congress.

  • Perlman-Markham

    Robin Lou Perlman-Markham, age 48, passed away on August 4th, 2008, at her home in Los Alamos.

    She was born in Colorado and lived in Los Alamos most of her life. She was a valued employee at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for over 17 years. Most of her time was spent in the Radiation Instrumentation Calibration Facility. Robin loved to travel cherished her pets, and looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren. She had many friends that loved her. Her contagious laugh and smile will be missed.

  • Public examines municipal building site options

    Questions ranging from why the new municipal building can’t look like the old one to which option will cost taxpayers more were asked by residents attending the second presentation on plan options in Council Chambers Thursday.

    Community Development Director Rick Bohn discussed the present Municipal Building site first. He had copies of an ad hoc report and a draft municipal site document planfrom last year, which he said directly resulted in what was being presented.

  • Heritage talk recalls Oppenheimer hearings

    Introduced by archivist Roger Meade as one of the “giants of our past,” a former division leader of Los Alamos National Laboratory gave an insider story of the community’s reaction to the revocation of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s security clearance more than half a century ago.

    Oppenheimer was the lab’s first director during World War II and the Manhattan Project’s race to build the atomic bomb.

  • County begins skate park site work

    Crews removing shrubs from in front of Mesa Public Library Thursday was unexpected for some following County Council’s agreement Tuesday to consider a petition asking to let voters decide in November if that location is appropriate for a skate park.

    The petitioners suggested voters be asked if the county should build a $500,000 skate board park in front of Mesa Public Library – yes or no, and said they would accept the majority’s decision.

    Mike Wismer presented the request to council on behalf of the petitioners Tuesday evening.

  • Sports update

    Rau finishes third at Sun Country Junior Championship

    Golfer Sean Rau finished third in his age bracket at the Sun Country PGA Junior Tour Championship.

    The tournament was held July 29-30 at Albuquerque's Desert Greens Golf Course.

    Rau shot a 55 the first day and a 54 the second day in nine holes, finishing six shots back of the division co-champions Michael Elias and Cristoffer Rudosky.

    Elias and Rudosky finished with a two-day total of 101 in the boys 7-8 age bracket.

    6:08 p.m. – A 17-year-old Los Alamos girl reported a loss of property in the 1400 block of Iris Street. The estimated loss is $400.
