  • Cross country: LA girls like their chances to reclaim state title

Some may have thought that when Kathy Hipwood said the Belen Eagles shouldn’t be overlooked heading into the 2007 state Class AAAA girls cross country championship race, she was being polite.

Apparently, though, Hipwood was doing more than trying to avoid giving the Eagles locker room fodder, and she alone may have seen the Eagles as a legitimate state title threat.

Of course, Belen proved Hipwood, the co-head coach of the Los Alamos Hilltopper cross country program correct on all counts, topping all comers at the state championship race, held at Rio Rancho.

  • Cross country: LA boys were 2nd in nation in 2007

There are worse ways to end the season than the way the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country squad ended 2007.

Few thought the 2007 state Class AAAA title meet was going to be little more than a coronation run for the Albuquerque Academy Chargers, but the Hilltoppers stunned the Chargers at that meet, grabbing four top 10 team finishes.

Little did anyone know, however, Los Alamos was just getting warmed up.

  • Construction crews begin work on skate park

Despite residents’ efforts to get the County Council to reconsider the location, contractors began grading the area in front of the Mesa Public Library on Tuesday in preparation for the construction of the much anticipated skate park.

Jack and Colleen Hanlon filed an appeal on the skate park location in District Court in August, hoping to get the council to reconsider the Mesa Library location.

  • A performance sure to sparkle

The Los Alamos Concert Association’s “Jewel of a Season” opens Sept. 14, with a sparkling performance by the Jupiter String Quartet. The performance begins at 4 p.m. in Duane Smith Auditorium, and will be followed by dinner with the artists at the Central Avenue Grill.

  • PEN&INK POSSIBILITIES: Joy is ageless

Nothing stays new forever. Cracks, creases and threadbare patches eventually appear, replacing shiny perfection.

Aging does not mean gloomy, depressing times enter as happiness exits. It is just a different stage, a completely unique experience.

Maintenance, however, may be a necessity in this stage. Sometimes a little more attention is required.

For instance, the sculpture, “Grandmother’s Joy,” by Fritz White, was purchased in 1998 for the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Now, a decade later, it needs some TLC.

  • The final act of the series

Dear friends of the Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series,

Here we go with the last concert of the 2008 Summer Series.

Friday, we’ll be at Zia Credit Union with local blues-rockers Julie Stewart and the Motor Kings and I hope you can join us.

The Motor Kings are a five-piece band that plays mostly original music as well as the music of Etta James, The Allman Brothers, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Robben Ford, Tina Turner and a few other classics and near classics.

  • Taking dinner to new heights

There’s a new restaurant in town, but the hitch is, it’ll only be open for one night. Morrie Pongratz and the youth team for the United Way have reprised an age-old event called, Dinner over Diamond.

Team Captain Ben Havemann and his crew will host dinner with the Diamond Diner, to raise funds for the United Way of Northern New Mexico.

From 4:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday, drivers on Diamond Drive will see tables and waiters distributed evenly on the overpass by Los Alamos High School.

  • Swimming: Black, Bernstein picked to head LAHS program

Los Alamos High School announced just before noon today the hiring of a pair of interim coaches to lead the Hilltopper boys and girls swim teams for the upcoming 2008-09 season.

Cindy Black and Rusty Bernstein will take over the head coaching duties vacated by Bev Leasure earlier this year.

Black and Bernstein didn’t actually apply for the position as a unit, but after meeting with the interview panels and with the two applicants themselves, school officials decided the co-head coaching job would be the best situation.
