    Ice skating
    Bic M.A.C. Skating night, an evening of ice skating for middle school students, will be from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink.
    The event is coordinated by the Youth Activity Center and music and refreshments will be provided.

    Movie night
    The White Rock Family Friendly Film Series continues at the White Rock Library at 7 p.m. Thursday with the showing of “Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole.” The event is free and the drinks and popcorn also will be provided.

  • Governor: Centennial will be New Mexico’s chance to shine

    SANTA FE— Gov. Susana Martinez said next year’s centennial is New Mexico’s once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shine.
    Martinez marked New Mexico’s 99th birthday last week by announcing ongoing plans for a 16-month commemoration of next year’s Statehood Centennial.
    Plans include numerous exhibits, lectures and community projects statewide and educational efforts to encourage young people to learn about New Mexico history.

    TUCSON, Ariz.— Mysterious black bag in hand, Jared Loughner ran into the desert from his angry father, who was driving a truck on a futile pursuit.
    Hours after Randy Loughner’s confrontation with his 22-year-old son Saturday morning, six people were shot dead and more than a dozen others wounded — and Jared Loughner was in custody.

  • Reel Deal hosts film fest

    Get out your parka and wax your boards — it’s time for the Backcountry Film Festival. This national traveling film festival will be in Los Alamos for one night only — Jan. 27.  It will show at the Reel Deal Theater at 7 p.m. for $7, which will benefit the Pajarito Environmental Education Center.  
    Now in its sixth year, the Backcountry Film Festival highlights the beauty, diversity and fun of the winter backcountry experience.

    The Republican Party of Los Alamos will elect the 2011-2012 County Central Committee and its officers at the Best Western Hilltop House. The County Contingent to the Republican Party of New Mexico Central Committee will also be elected. Republicans registered in the County of Los Alamos are encouraged to attend. Registration opens at 6:30 p.m. and closes at 7 p.m.  A meeting of the 2009-2010 Central Committee begins at 7 p.m., followed by Ward Caucuses and the County Convention.   • Actor David Nelson of famous TV family dies at 74

    LOS ANGELES (AP) — David Nelson, who starred on his parents' popular television show "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," has died, a family spokesman said. He was 74.

    Nelson, who was battling complications of colon cancer, died Tuesday at his Los Angeles home, said family spokesman and longtime Hollywood publicist Dale Olson.
