  • Council votes to adopt traffic ordinance

      Two Public Hearings were held during the Dec. 16 County Council meeting. Eun Jung Kim, the owner of Origami Restaurant, located at 182 Central Park Avenue applied for a liquor license. The County adopted a code relating to traffic and vehicles, as well.

      The liquor license for Origami was approved by Councilors with minimal discussion. Councilor Nona Bowman moved to approve the license, which was seconded by Councilor Frances Berting. The motion passed 5-0, with Vice Chairman Robert Gibson abstaining.

  • Schools met difficult challenges in 2008

    Attempts to fill retired Superintendent James Anderson’s substantial shoes proved unsuccessful and led the Los Alamos Board of Education to convince Assistant Superintendent Mary McLeod to take the reins for at least one year.

    Many notables expressed appreciation for Anderson’s contributions, including New Mexico’s congressional delegation.

    Business leader Roger Waterman described Los Alamos as having been blessed that Anderson led the schools for 14 years.

    The Los Alamos Public Schools has hundreds of employees who pull off a variety of tasks people may never even know about, on a daily basis.

  • Girls basketball: LA drops tourney opener

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team dropped its first round contest at the Goddard Holiday Classic Monday afternoon.

    The Hilltoppers took on Class AAA Tohatchi in the opening round of the tournament, being played in Roswell. Tohatchi (3-3) outran Los Alamos in the first half and held on in the second half to take a 53-45 victory.

    No other information on Monday’s game was available as of press time Tuesday.

  • LA resident nominated for AARP award

    AARP New Mexico honored Robert Nunz of Los Alamos as a 2008 Andrus Award Nominee.

    The annual Andrus Award is named for Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus who founded AARP. The award honors those who exemplify her spirit of giving back to others. It is bestowed on outstanding AARP volunteers who make a powerful difference in their communities, in ways that support AARP’s vision of community service and inspire others to volunteer.

  • Be safe when viewing farolitos

      The Los Alamos County Transportation Division will turn off the power to various streetlights to enhance the viewing of holiday farolitos. The streetlights will be turned off December 24 and 25 and will be restored on December 26.

  • Ceremony celebrates Central Avenue Streetscapes and Pedestrian Crossings

    Employees from Los Alamos County’s Public Works Department, members of the LA Walks group, Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation (LACDC) and the public celebrated the completion of the Phase 2 Central Avenue Streetscapes and Pedestrian Crossings project during a special ceremony at the Community Building Thursday.

    A set of historic medical records stored in a Quonset hut leased by the Los Alamos Medical Center will be retrieved, decontaminated and sorted for permanent disposition under a million dollar agreement that has been signed by LAMC and the Department of Energy.

  • Life after working for Pete Domenici

    Veronica Rodriguez spent more than a decade working for New Mexico’s beloved Sen. Pete Domenici. He retires Dec. 31 and as with the rest of his longtime staff, she had to seek new employment. Rodriguez began working at Los Alamos National Bank in October.

    During an interview in her new office, Rodriguez reminisced about her years with Domenici and her life today.
