  • Manager has passion for people

    For a lot of people, retirement is something to look forward to. For Bernadette Quintana, the manager at the Los Alamos Motor Vehicle Division, retirement is a bittersweet thought.

    Though she has been planning retirement since this summer, she has yet to actually take the leap into the retiree pool.

    Quintana, a Santa Cruz native, has worked for the MVD for approximately 23 years, but has worked for the state since 1982.

  • Statewide MainStreet members visit hill

    More than 40 MainStreet members from across the state gathered in Los Alamos this week to brainstorm and share activities and accomplishments.

    Los Alamos MainStreet Coordinator Jeremy Varela hosted the three-day event, which kicked off Tuesday with a reception at Fuller Lodge.

    Member Services Coordinator Katy Korkos of the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce stopped by a dinner held for the group at the Hilltop House Hotel Tuesday evening.

  • Retracing ancestors' footsteps

    In 1846, 500 members of the Mormon Battalion marched approximately 2,000 miles to fight in the Mexican-American War. Today, that journey is being taken again and the marchers will be arriving in Santa Fe Saturday. In recognition, there will be at Mormon Battalion Event Saturday at the Stake Center and Los Alamos residents are invited.

  • Football: LA meets Taos to open district

    After a rough outing minus several key players, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football will try to bounce back in its District 2AAAA opener.

    Los Alamos was without star running back Raul Rodriguez due to an ankle injury, as well as other three other offensive starters. It scored no offensive points in an 18-2 loss to the Albuquerque Academy Chargers last week.

    Rodriguez isn’t expected back this week.

    Friday, Los Alamos takes on the Taos Tigers. It’s the 2AAAA opener for both schools.

  • Volleyball: LA sweeps Bernalillo on the road

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team ran its record to 2-0 in District 2AAAA play with a 3-0 road win Wednesday night.

    The Hilltoppers got off to a slow start in the first two games of Wednesday’s contest at Bernalillo, but bounced back in both games. In the third game, the Hilltoppers jumped out to a big lead and never looked back.

    Los Alamos won 25-13, 25-14 25-9. It was the second sweep in as many district outings for Los Alamos, which also evened its record on the season to 7-7.

  • Running: Pajarito hosting trail runs Saturday

    The Pajarito Trail Runs Festival is scheduled for Saturday at Pajarito Mountain Ski Area.

    The event will feature a 10K and a 15-mile run.

    Registration starts at 8 a.m. Saturday. Races start at 9 a.m. and kids' activities start at 9:30 a.m. A kids' fun run will be held at 11:15 a.m.

    Online registration is also open until Friday at www.active.com.

    Proceeds will go to benefit the Pajarito Environmental Education Center.

  • LANL awarded Patriot Award for Guard support

    Melvin Borrego dodged incoming rockets and survived routine threats of daisy-chained roadside bombs in Iraq.

    He’s a sergeant first-class for the 1115th transportation company of the New Mexico National Guard. His company has also been called up for humanitarian missions in the states for hurricanes Katrina and Rita and snow-disaster relief in Chama last winter.

  • County enters 30-year agreement with NMMEAA

    Utilities Board members met with county councilors for a special session Tuesday night. They discussed adopting a resolution that would permit the county to enter into an agreement with the New Mexico Municipal Energy Acquisition Authority for a 30-year supply of natural gas at a set discount of the price index.

    After discussion and questions, councilors voted 7-0 to pass the motion.

    Council authorized Chair Jim Hall to execute the gas supply agreement and financial guaranty agreement.

  • Tour the raptor center

    This organization and its birds have made numerous appearances in Los Alamos.

    The Santa Fe Raptor Center staff and birds visit local schools, the farmer’s market and library. Now, it’s Los Alamos’ turn to visit the raptor center.

    An open house will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. The raptor center is located at #32 Jacinto Road in Santa Fe.

    “Basically people will be able to see the raptor housing,” Laura Swartz of the raptor center said.

  • Pen&Ink Possibilities: Drawing outside the lines

    What constitutes a work of art? Should all art fit within the limits of whatever definition Webster’s Dictionary assigns the word or should it venture outside the lines in favor of multiple meanings?

    Wandering through the newest exhibit at the Mesa Public Library, it seems clear that art defies a single definition. If something or someone is valued so highly and made immortal through paint, clay or any other medium, so in order that it can be shared with the rest of the world, then the work is worthy of the term art.
