  • New program predicts fire behavior

    Firefighters facing fast-moving wildfires need better tools to predict erratic fire behavior, especially in forests with dead trees caused by massive outbreaks of bark beetles whose predations create an abundance of dead fuel and changes in the tree canopy structure.

  • County economic plan OK'd

    After seven months of analysis and planning, two discussions with council and numerous meetings with staff, community members and experts, the county’s new economic vitality administrator Greg Fisher, presented a plan to council Tuesday. After two-and-a-half hours of intense questioning, the plan was approved in a 4-2 vote.

  • LA Rodeo set for this weekend

    Once again, Los Alamos County’s recreation department will host a rodeo as part of this weekend’s county fair.

    The 2012 rodeo is scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday afternoon at Brewer Arena on North Mesa. Rodeo competition is open to all comers who dare to saddle up a bull or rope a calf.

    This year, however, rodeo coordinators are being particularly cautious with horses. An outbreak of vesicular stomatitis has been reported in New Mexico, with close to 30 horses in five counties affected as of July 31, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

    Hawk football meeting is today

    The Los Alamos Middle School Hawk football program will hold an orientation session tonight. The orientation will be from 5-7 p.m. at Brousseau Gymnasium.

    Any students entering seventh or eighth grade interested in playing football for LAMS is encouraged to attend. The orientation process will include turning in all necessary participation paperwork, issuing of equipment and information on the Hawks’ football program.

    Eighth grade players should show up by 5 p.m. and seventh grade players by 6 p.m.
