  • Volleyball: Toppers sweep Tigers in 2AAAA

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team took another step toward the district championship Saturday at Taos.

    After getting warmed up in the first game, Los Alamos cruised to a 3-0 sweep at Taos to stay on the inside track to the District 2AAAA title.

    The Hilltoppers, who rarely fire out of the gate, held on in game one for a 25-21 win over the Tigers, then cruised to wins in games two and three, 25-11, 25-12. They got a solid overall team effort minus the help of two starters, Sara Scott and Jessica Stokes.

  • Girls soccer: LA posts its 7th 2-4A shutout

    About the only question in the second half of Saturday’s Los Alamos-Taos girls soccer game was whether Taos’ Tigers would get a shot off before time expired.

    They didn’t. They didn’t even get particularly close to it.

    That’s been about par for the course throughout the District 2AAAA girls soccer season, however. Los Alamos topped Taos 6-0 Saturday at Sullivan Field to finish a perfect 7-0 on the district season.

  • Boys soccer: Toppers hold off Tigers, 3-2

    Playing for little more than to complete the stated goal of going undefeated in District 2AAAA, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team knocked off the Taos Tigers Saturday.

    Los Alamos picked up three first-half goals and hung on through a late Taos rally to win 3-2 Saturday at Sullivan Field.

    With the win, the Hilltoppers finished the 2AAAA season a spotless 7-0 (14-4 overall). A scheduled game a week earlier against Española Valley which was postponed due to weather won’t be made up — it would have had no meaningful impact on the district standings.

  • Football: LA picks up shutout win at home

    Early this season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team’s defense struggled to slow down opposing offenses.

    Friday, however, the Hilltoppers came up with the big plays when they were needed in pitching a shutout against the Farmington Scorpions.

    Los Alamos forced two turnovers and stopped Farmington on four fourth-down attempts in a 12-0 nondistrict win at Sullivan Field.

  • No other way?

    The county council will meet in closed session Tuesday night to discuss plans for purchasing the Los Alamos Apartments.

    We wish there was some other way to proceed here than once again government taking charge of local land.

    We understand the concern that is felt by councilors about losing control. But at what point do we simply have everything run and owned by the county? We hope this is just a step in the process to turn this land over to private enterprise.

  • Again, our state holds the bottom

    Once again, New Mexico was at the bottom of a national list.

    This time we ranked worst in the country for the percentage of residents who are covered by health insurance through their employers, according to a new report from the Economic Policy Institute.

    The Washington, D.C.-based nonpartisan think tank found that 50.7 percent of New Mexico’s population less than 65 years old was covered by employer-sponsored health insurance in 2006-2007 and 59.1 percent of all workers were insured by their employers over the same period, the 22-page report released last week found.

  • Bingaman responds to financial crisis

    On a day spent visiting Los Alamos and the laboratory Thursday, Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., came by the Monitor newsroom to offer his perspective on current issues.

    He said he had been greeted with a lot of questions about the economy during this visit to the state.

    While trying to see beyond the immediate crisis in global finance, he said, “A lot of folks can take some of the blame.”

  • LANB rejected subprime lure; remains solid as financial industry reels

    While financial institutions across the country flounder, Los Alamos National Bank thrives because it did not engage in sub-prime lending, has limited non-traditional loans and no structured debt instruments.

    LANB President Steve Wells discussed the bank and the overall financial market during his talk to the Los Alamos Public Safety Association Thursday.

  • Grazing season ends on the preserve

    The big rigs rolled slowly out of the Valle Grande a couple of weeks ago, each loaded with 48,000 pounds of healthy, live cargo, marking the end of the 2008 grazing season at the Valles Grande National Preserve.

    “This year’s steer operation included the largest number of livestock since the government’s purchase and with this opportunity also came some challenges,” said Dennis Trujillo, the preserve manager, summing up the summer.
