  • PEEC reports to school board

    At first, Los Alamos Public Schools gave the Pajarito Environmental Education Center a one-year lease, but the time was extended to three years in which the activities of PEEC exploded. Attendance to PEEC programs grew, the amount of activities escalated and finances rose.

    Through a slideshow and speeches, members of the school board learned just how much PEEC has achieved in three years during the regular meeting Tuesday.

    Board president Chick Keller reported PEEC has an 11-member board and two part time staff members, Diane Noveroske and Branden Willman-Kozimor.

  • Airport basin project ahead of schedule

    It's been a few months since the Airport Basin Site Project was started and it seems that things are starting to take shape. Capital Projects Director Anne Laurent and Project Manager David Apple presented council with a quarterly update during the county council meeting on Monday night at the community building.

  • Rotary honors Kayla Arnone

    Rotary Club of Los Alamos honors Los Alamos High School seniors each month, and Kayla Arnone was chosen to be Student of the Month for September. She invited her employer of two years, psychologist Heather Cole, to accompany her to the club’s honoring luncheon at the University of New Mexico- Los Alamos Oct. 30.

  • Wood, Saga win Yum Run

    Blake Wood celebrated his 50th birthday by winning the Fourth Annual Ruby Ks Yum Run, held Oct. 18.

    Wood won with an unadjusted time of 17:16, although he did not need the 2 minute, 16 second adjustment in the age-handicapped race. Wood finished 10 seconds ahead of second-place crosser Hans Hanson. But the comparatively young Hanson dropped to fifth as the older Bill Crooks, Jeff Johnson, and Clay Mosely all topped him after age adjustment.

    In the women’s division, Vikki Saga won with an adjusted time of 19:11.

  • Lake wins three times at meet

    Los Alamos swimmer Dylan Lake won three finals at the Duke City Spooktacular held Oct. 25-26 in Albuquerque.

    Lake took top honors in the senior 50-meter freestyle, mixed senior 400 individual medley and senior 50 meter butterfly. Along with those, he also finished second in the 500 freestyle and 200 breaststroke.

    Sammi Kao of Los Alamos finished third in the 200 butterfly and fourth in a pair of events, while Justin Tripp was third in the 500 freestyle and Alisa Romero was sixth in the 1650 freestyle.

  • Rugby team plays in Colorado

    Local rugby player Liz Dinkel will travel to Laramie, Wyo., for a Friday tryout for the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union Women’s Under-23 Select Side.

    Dinkel plays for the Los Alamos Under-19 women’s Rugby Club team, which recently qualified to play in Denver for third place in the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union tournament.

    Team organizers felt these were big accomplishments for a team which will only be losing two starters next season.

  • HR director enables cultural resource in schools

    Even in this age of multitasking it seems a little out of character that the human resources director at Los Alamos Public Schools is also organizing a new school program in theater arts.

    But that’s what James Telles is doing.

    Along with his administrative responsibilities,

    he is coordinating and developing Atomic City Children’s Theater, a drama program for the elementary schools.

    It’s an arts-enrichment program, meant to be fun and also provide a lot of important educational vitamins.

  • Serving those who served

     New Mexico is receiving two 38-foot motor coaches from the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (USDVA) in Washington, D.C.

    The mobile centers will serve military Veterans, according to a news release by the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS) Friday.

    The vehicles will be outfitted to allow counseling services in a comfortable and confidential setting, according to the release.

  • JUNE

    Malcolm Neville June died October 27, 2008. He was 81. June was born September 28, 1929,. He is survived by his son, Malcolm Neville June Jr.; grandson, Soren June; granddaughters: Mira and Chiara June; brothers: Richard and Donald June.

    Malcolm was employed with Los Alamos National Labs as a Mechanical Engineer. He was a photographer, a marksman and a baseball coach.

    A Graveside service will take place Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos.
