    Los Alamos National Laboratory and investment partners celebrated the launch of LabStart, LLC, a revitalized program for getting lab technology out the door and into new businesses.

    A few dozen laboratory employees and managers networked with a handful of entrepreneurs Monday night at De Colores, as a signed contract was presented to the parties involved and B. Russell (Russ) Hopper was named LabStart’s entrepreneur in residence.

  • Diamond Drive project faced difficulties

    Appearances by Old Man Winter may have been sparse for Los Alamos this winter in terms of snow accumulation, but that hasn’t stopped cold weather from being a problem.

    Phase II of the Diamond Drive project was completed in December, however, Albuquerque contractor AS Horner is still working on punch list items.

    Completion of the roadwork has been delayed because of cold weather and as a result, the contractor has asked the county for an extension so that the work can be completed in warmer weather.

    Warm ocean breezes added another pleasant layer to the marvelous memories two local adventurers brought back from their exotic wedding in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

    “It really was perfect,” Veterinarian Shayna Whitaker said. “In fact, the entire week we spent in Jamaica was perfect.”

    Many coaches around the state, including more than a few from Los Alamos High School, have bemoaned teams from small districts which sometimes seem to qualify for postseason events by default.

    Guess who might now be in one of those loathsome districts?

    In the newly revised New Mexico Activities Association’s Alignment and Classification Proposal, District 2AAAA, which Los Alamos competes in, could be down to just four teams for the four-year block of 2010-2014.

  • Basketball: Results from local free throw contest

    The local winners of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest will head later this month to the district championship.

    Los Alamos held its free throw contest Jan. 25. The contest was for girls and boys between the ages of 10-14.

    In all, five boys and five girls will advance in the different age categories. Each contestant was given 15 free throws.

    The winners at the district meet, which will be held at Peñasco High School, will advance to the state championship. That will be held March 28 in Albuquerque.

  • Going for the crown

    Bernadette Lauritzen wears a large number of hats in the community. She is a wife, a mother and a board member of the Leadership Los Alamos and Friends of the Senior Center. Laurtizen also runs Assets in Action, works as the wedding coordinator at the United Church of Los Alamos, operates the Los Alamos Youth Leadership program, writes and photographs for the Monitor and hosts a program on KRSN radio.
