    Eric Edelmann, this month’s Rotary Student of the Month, is a senior at Los Alamos High School. During the Rotary ceremony, he named Diane Toups, a guidance counselor at the high school, as an adult who’s had an impact on him.
    He is highly active in the community, as president of the Natural Helpers Club and a leader among his peers, as a member of both the Los Alamos Youth Leadership and the high school student government.

  • Dog Obedience Club to offer new classes

      Los Alamos Dog Obedience Club is offering the “RENT” Free club to local youth and their dogs.
    The RENT Free club, or paRENT free class, is open to youth in 4th grade through high school.
    Dogs must have completed Basic Manners or have instructor approval. This class will be at 6:39 p.m. Thursdays, starting April 14.
    Parents are expected to attend the first class, where dog safety, dog health and the responsibilities of owning a dog will be discussed.

  • Animal Shelter 03-20-11

    The Los Alamos Animal Shelter, 226 East Road, 662-8179, has a great selection of on-site adoptable pets; others are in foster care with loving, temporary homes.
    All of our fully reconditioned adoptable pets are spayed or neutered, have their shots and are micro-chipped.

  • AAUW hosts Deanise Marta

    In honor of Women’s History Month, the American Association of University Women is hosting Deanise Marta who will present a program about the key players in the women’s suffrage movement at 7:30 p.m. March 24 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  The public is invited hear to Marta speak.

  • Explore the universe at PEEC

    It is the golden age of astronomy when many age-old questions are being answered.
    Join Pajarito Environmental Education Center for a free exploration of the wonders of the sky at 7 p.m. March 26.
    Attendees will hear a talk by James Maxwell, astronomy tour leader for the Valles Caldera National Preserve and see examples of his astrophotography. The group will then head outside to see the stars through a large, 20-inch telescope (weather permitting).

    Once again, the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation’s annual Great Conversations dinner is coming to town. Join a group of tablemates and a speaker at 5:30 p.m. April 10 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center for an informative and fun conversation.

  • Piñon students recognized for outstanding performance

  • Aspen Chess club earns team title

    Aspen Elementary Chess club grabbed the team title in the boys 3-5 grade division to highlight its participation in the Susan Polgar National Open in Chandler, Ariz. March 4-6.
    The team, comprised of Donald Poston fifth grade, Alex Ionkov, fifth grade, Henry Poston, third grade and Dimitri Lopez, third grade, scored 20.5 points to best Anasazi’s 17.5 points for the team championship in a field of over 25 teams.

  • Airport renovation

    The Los Alamos Airport will soon undergo some changes and updates.  The existing runway will be rehabilitated and  extended eastward by 450 feet.
    A new visual approach system, which will involve electrical work at the airport, will also be installed.
    The runway is expected to close May 31 for three weeks for the repaving to occur, followed by a closure for seven days in July for grooving and striping.
    The possible return of scheduled air service to the airport will be discussed at 7 p.m. Tuesday at White Rock Fire Station 3.
