  • Candidates file for school; college boards

    After deliberating the pros and cons of serving another four years on the Los Alamos Board of Education, current President Steve Girrens decided not to run again.

    “It’s important to me to continue working on current projects critical to the district such as the upcoming bond election and our 20-year facilities plan, and I intend to do that, but from a committee position rather than as a board member,” Girrens said. “I want to step aside and let others in my district have an opportunity to serve.”

  • LANL selected for pits

    As expected, Los Alamos National Laboratory has been designated the site within the nuclear weapons complex where plutonium triggers and other plutonium research will be concentrated.

    According to a formal record to be published this week, plutonium stockpiles are to be removed from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in Livermore, Calif., where concerned citizen groups have protested their presence in a facility surrounded by suburban neighborhoods. Highly enriched uranium already has been taken from the Sandia National Laboratory in New Mexico.

  • Maintenance worker earned state award

    Albuquerque – Jeff Sargent of Los Alamos was one of several maintenance staff who earned a 2008 Ben Luján Maintenance Achievement Award. In total, eight school districts and 19 district staffers, received awards. The school districts that received awards were Aztec, Carlsbad, Gadsden, Peñasco, Roswell, Silver, Tatum and Truth or Consequences.

  • Western governors go one, two

    SANTA FE – Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano  beat New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to a cabinet post in the Barack Obama administration by two days.

    Originally Richardson’s appointment as Commerce Secretary was to be announced before Napolitano’s, but Obama decided to leave him off economic team announcements.

    For awhile that was interpreted to be a slight or an indication that Richardson had problems. But now, it is being interpreted by the national press as an attempt by President-Elect Obama to give Bill his own special time in the spotlight.

  • Triathlon: Locals take part in Kona qualifiers

    Several local multi-sport athletes have been keeping busy during the 2008 season.

    A trio of Los Alamos ironman competitors took part in Ford Ironman Arizona at the end of November. Although none of them qualified for the World Ironman Championships, which will be held in October 2009, this won’t be the last chance for those wanting to punch their tickets to Hawaii.

    Martin Pieck of Los Alamos was the top finisher at Ironman Arizona, which was held in Tempe.

  • Fencing: LAFC picks up four Junior Olympic nods

    Several members of the Los Alamos Fencing Club qualified for the United States Fencing Association Junior Olympics recently.

    Seth Longo, Farida Ismail, Kyle Partin and Ciara Sterbenz all picked up qualification marks at a tournament held Dec. 5-6 in Albuquerque. The event attracted most of the top youth fencers from the New Mexico division.

    Ismail finished second behind Anna Olesinkski of Roswell, the state’s top female youth fencer, in both the junior women’s epee and cadet women’s epee, but still qualified for the Junior Olympics in both categories.

  • Boys basketball: LA meets Cimarron in first round of Lujan tourney

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team will open the Ben Lujan Invitational Tournament Thursday night against Cimarron.

    The Ben Lujan Invitational is in its ninth consecutive year. It is hosted by the Pojoaque Elks.

    The tournament continues through Saturday. All games will be played at Ben Lujan Gymnasium in Jacona.

    Los Alamos (6-3) heads into the tournament on its first losing streak of the season. It dropped its final two games at the Joe Armijo Invitational last weekend after an opening round victory over Albuquerque Academy.

  • Hard work pays off for Phillips who is accepted to Brown Univ.

    Years of dedication to his studies has earned Los Alamos High School senior, William Phillips, IV, a slot at Brown University this fall.

    More than 18,000 applicants applied for just 1,450 places in the freshman class. The 17-year-old received his early decision acceptance letter last week and described the Ivy League college in Providence, R.I. as his top pick.

  • Enloe appointed to Federal Reserve Board

    Los Alamos National Bank Chairman and CEO William C. Enloe had to turn down an invitation from Lt. Gov. Diane Denish to serve on her transition advisory team because he’s been appointed to the Federal Reserve Board.

    “They called and asked me if I would accept if appointed and I said I would,” said Enloe during an interview Monday. “They vetted me and made sure I wasn’t involved in party politics.”

  • Energy Department contracts hospital to save workers’ records

    Former employees of Los Alamos National Laboratory with claims against the federal government for work-related illnesses won a longstanding grievance last week.

    Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M. reported that the Los Alamos Medical Center has been awarded a $999,999 contract by the Department of Energy to help salvage thousands of old medical and exposure records in the hospital basement and a nearby warehouse.
