  • ‘Cars 2’ serves up the action overseas

    Spies and espionage aren’t exactly what you’d expect from an animated Disney movie, but that’s exactly what you’ll find in “Cars 2.”
    The Pixar computer-animated film released on June 24 is the sequel to the 2006 film, “Cars.” Unlike the original film, however, “Cars 2” is set in Japan, Italy and England.
    The characters participate in a World Grand Prix race and unwittingly get involved in espionage.
    Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is challenged to race in the World Grand Prix by a popular Italian racecar, Francesco Burnoulli (voiced by John Tuturro).

  • CHWC teaches teens about service

    Helping others and gaining nothing in return may seem like a waste of time to some people, but at Catholic Heart Work Camp, that’s exactly what high school students do.
    Every year, teenagers from around the country head to a major city to share their love of Jesus and serve the neglected through participating in CHWC.
    For one week in June, 22 Los Alamos High School students from Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church loaded into four vans with five chaperons and headed to Denver, Colo.
    They met at 6 a.m. June 12 and after seven hours, they arrived at Ranum High School in Denver. The school would be home base for the next six days. There they met over 400 student and chaperone camp participants.

  • Wedding: Hemphill-Nichols

    Hemphill-Nichols
    Doug and Geralyn Hemphill of Los Alamos are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Kristen, to Bill Nichols, son of Dr. Mike and Debi Nichols, also of Los Alamos.  
    Kristen graduated from Los Alamos High School in 2005 and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in nutrition at Colorado State University.  
    Bill graduated from Los Alamos High School in 2002 and is currently enrolled in a pediatric dental residency program at the Children’s Hospital in Detroit, Mich.
    The couple is planning an August wedding.

    The Los Alamos Animal Shelter, 226 East Road, 662-8179, has a great selection of on-site adoptable pets; others are in foster care with loving, temporary homes.
    Thanks to the shelter staff for outstanding service to the community during the Las Conchas Fire evacuation.

  • Schaumberg awarded Bronze Star

    Airman Jacob Schaumberg, right, was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor on May 6, byKen Wilsbach, 18th Wing Commander in the United States Air Force. Schaumberg is currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan and is a 2000 graduate of Los Alamos High School. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his part in rescuing two wounded people in Afghanistan.

  • La Leche League meeting Tuesday

    La Leche League of Los Alamos will discuss, “Why Breastfeed your Baby?” at their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Teen Room at the First United Methodist Church, 715 Diamond Dr.
    Nursing babies and toddlers who have difficulty separating, are welcome.
    LLL is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing information, education, support, and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed.

  • LAPS teachers headed to math conference

    The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is holding a regional conference in Albuquerque and the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation will provide funding for 15 Los Alamos Public School teachers to attend the event in November.
