    If your New Year’s resolution is to get into shape and be fit, as well gain greater strength and vitality, the opportunity to fulfill this resolution has arrived.

    The Los Alamos Cooperative Extension Service and the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization are offering two strength training program options, StrongWomen, and Men Growing Stronger.

    Both programs were developed by Tufts University at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy in Boston.

  • Swimming and diving: LA earns a pair of wins, many qualifying marks

    With little in the way of competition Saturday, the main focus of the Los Alamos Quad for the Hilltopper swim teams was simply to get the best times.

    Despite the lack of competitive push in most events — Los Alamos girls won all but two events Saturday and the boys won 10 events — the Hilltoppers were up to the challenge.

    The Hilltopper boys won the Los Alamos Quad with a team score of 380, holding off Socorro, which finished with 272, while the Hilltopper girls took 517 points to win going away.

  • 2009

    We enter 2009 with a lot of questions. From the situation nationally with a new president to local issues of jobs and development, many folks are wondering just how well off we are.

    As we entered 2008 there were some serious matters facing us – some of which has been resolved. But some were not and many new ones surfaced.

    The situation at Los Alamos National Laboratory is far from settled. There are still talks of cutbacks, questions of funding – especially given the unsettled national situation and economic problems.

  • Arts Council offers music to munch on

    It’s a rather unusual lunch, participants can sample morsels of trombone, trumpet and piano music; they can savor classical, Brazilian and ragtime sounds. While there will not be anything edible for people to sink their teeth into, the Los Alamos Arts Council’s upcoming Brown Bag concert will definitely satisfy people’s appetite for music.

    The concert, which will be held at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at Fuller Lodge, will feature Donna Smith on piano and Jan McDonald on trumpet.

  • PEN&INKee^POSSIBILITIES: The art of photography

    It’s the photography enthusiasts’ time to shine. The Los Alamos Photography Club will host an upcoming photography show and the Los Alamos Historical Society will offer shutterbugs a chance to have their work printed on holiday greeting cards, the electric click of shutters and the bright lights of flashes are sure to be seen and heard throughout town.

    I remember years ago walking through a photography exhibit and reading a quote by a photographer who said that the art in photography isn’t how you take a photo but where you are standing.

  • Council votes to adopt traffic ordinance

      Two Public Hearings were held during the Dec. 16 County Council meeting. Eun Jung Kim, the owner of Origami Restaurant, located at 182 Central Park Avenue applied for a liquor license. The County adopted a code relating to traffic and vehicles, as well.

      The liquor license for Origami was approved by Councilors with minimal discussion. Councilor Nona Bowman moved to approve the license, which was seconded by Councilor Frances Berting. The motion passed 5-0, with Vice Chairman Robert Gibson abstaining.

  • Schools met difficult challenges in 2008

    Attempts to fill retired Superintendent James Anderson’s substantial shoes proved unsuccessful and led the Los Alamos Board of Education to convince Assistant Superintendent Mary McLeod to take the reins for at least one year.

    Many notables expressed appreciation for Anderson’s contributions, including New Mexico’s congressional delegation.

    Business leader Roger Waterman described Los Alamos as having been blessed that Anderson led the schools for 14 years.

  • Girls basketball: LA drops tourney opener

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team dropped its first round contest at the Goddard Holiday Classic Monday afternoon.

    The Hilltoppers took on Class AAA Tohatchi in the opening round of the tournament, being played in Roswell. Tohatchi (3-3) outran Los Alamos in the first half and held on in the second half to take a 53-45 victory.

    No other information on Monday’s game was available as of press time Tuesday.
