Ponderosa Group Campground will be closed for up to 10 days, pending the capture of a black bear, who swatted at a tent occupied by two members of a scout pack visiting the area.
At approximately 4 a.m. Wednesday, a black bear swatted at a tent occupied by a sleeping girl and her mother, according to Dan Williams, spokesperson for New Mexico Game and Fish. The tent was torn, and the bear’s claws grazed the
back of the juvenile’s neck, causing a minor abrasive injury.
“They heard the scratching on the tent and they ran out and scared the bear,” Williams said.
When asked how did they know it was a black bear, Williams said it was “the only kind of bear we have in New Mexico.”
