  • Gov. Martinez set to tour flood damaged Santa Clara

    SANTA CLARA PUEBLO, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez is set to visit Santa Clara Pueblo to get a firsthand look at flood damage and recovery efforts on the tribe's land.

    Martinez and state emergency management officials will meet with pueblo Gov. Walter Dasheno on Tuesday afternoon.

    Dasheno has been pressing federal officials to release funding that will help the tribe repair roads, remove debris and build infrastructure to control runoff from the burn scar of last year's Las Conchas Fire.

  • Stephen Covey, '7 Habits' author, dies at 79

    SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Stephen R. Covey, author of "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" as well as several other books that together have sold millions of copies, has died. He was 79.

    In a statement sent to employees of a Utah consulting firm Covey co-founded, his family said the writer and motivational speaker died at a hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho, early Monday due to complications from a bicycle accident in April.

    "In his final hours, he was surrounded by his loving wife and each one of his children and their spouses, just as he always wanted," the family said.

  • US economy remains in a funk as June retail sales slump

    WASHINGTON (AP) — The outlook for the U.S. economy appeared dimmer Monday after a report that Americans spent less at retail businesses for a third straight month in June.

    The report led some economists to downgrade their estimates for economic growth in the April-June quarter. Many now think the economy grew even less than in the first quarter of the year, when it expanded at a sluggish 1.9 percent annual rate.
