  • New Mexico to receive $18.3 million to fight crime

    Some $11.1 million of the $18.3 million New Mexico is getting from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fight crime is going to the state.  

    Of that funding, a little more than $5 million is available to communities throughout New Mexico on a competitive basis. The remainder will be allocated to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety to be distributed based on the state’s priorities.

    Los Alamos County is eligible for $24,241.

  • Chu retreats from Yucca Mountain

    Republican senators on the energy committee bore down on Secretary of Energy Steven Chu in a hearing Thursday in Washington.

    Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., returned to a topic from the presidential campaign as he interrogated Chu on nuclear power.

    Chu’s prepared remarks to the committee on the administration’s plan to gain energy independence, mentioned “nuclear” only once at the end and that reference was omitted in his oral statement.

  • The spring break trip of a lifetime

    The United Church opens a mini mall Sunday with its annual Mexico Mission auction. The silent and live auction is a large community event to raise funds to send a home-building crew to Mexico during spring break.

    Many local youth and adults find spring break as a time to recharge  the batteries as the school session heads into the final stretch. The United Church members and other community residents also find it a time to refill the spiritual well by providing services to others.

  • Friends will be helping friends March 14

    White Rock Presbyterian Church will host a yard sale and Navajo Taco sale March 14 to support the church’s Navajo Mission Project. The event begins at 9 a.m. at Presbyterian Church’s Memorial Hall located at                     310 Rover Blvd.

    The yard sale will feature clothing for all sizes, household items, appliances and tools.

  • LA has some key components back

    It might take some time for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys tennis team to see exactly how things might play out.

    But with a good nucleus returning, Los Alamos is hoping things will play out well enough to make another run in the state tournament.

    Los Alamos will be looking to make its third straight state Class AAAA final in 2009. It gets into the teeth of its schedule starting Saturday at Rio Rancho.

    The spring preseason workouts, which started officially Feb. 2, have been generally good for the Hilltoppers.

    Dear Editor,

    I am writing this letter to pass along some important information to LAMS and LAHS parents and members of the community and to request your help and support.  The LAHS Athletic Department recently learned they were accepted into the Smith’s Earn and Learn fundraising program. In talking with Vicki Nelms, LAHS athletic director, all the sports teams associated with the Los Alamos High School, as well as those associated with the Los Alamos Middle School, will benefit from this fundraising effort.

  • TIDDS is business as usual

    Dear Editor,

    Your fine editorial on tax increment financing (Does Not Seem Like A Good Deal To Us, Sunday, March 1) did not go nearly far enough. 

    It’s time to “connect the dots,” something which Common Cause N.M. has done for us in a 2007 report on the success of the real estate development industry in obtaining public subsidies from the state. (Google Common Cause N.M. and then click on “connect the dots research.”)

  • Letter gives honest view

    Dear Editor,

    I would like to express my appreciation to you for publishing the article entitled “What is the Right Thing” in the Monitor (Feb. 19, 2009). And I would also like to publicly express my heartfelt thanks to Jesse Taylor for the well written article.

    We need more people like that who are willing to share the facts in a courteous ad concise manner. Truth and honesty are rare virtues to be found in our present culture, but so much is needed.
