  • Earn a trip

    Two New Mexico high school seniors who are interested in science will be selected for an all expense paid, month-long trip to West Virginia’s Potomac Highlands for the National Youth Science Camp.  Applications are now being accepted for the prestigious 2009 program.

    Each year in the summer following graduation, two New Mexico high school seniors attend the intense camp for young scientists.  

    Last year, the New Mexico delegates were Megan Johnson and Kevin Wymer, both of Rio Rancho High School.

  • Baeball: LA opens season with two losses (duplicate)

    Heading into the 2009 season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team wants to turn a corner.

    Prior to Saturday’s opening doubleheader at Bomber Field against the Piedra Vista Panthers, Hilltopper manager Mike Gill said he expects his team to reach the next level and become a legitimate state title contender this season.

    Los Alamos got a good look at what it will need to do — and what it can’t afford to do — if it wants to compete in Class AAAA this season starting with Saturday’s game one.

  • District restricts Sullivan Field use

    Word that Sullivan Field is to be off limits to non-school activities brought county officials and members of the public to the podium during Thursday’s school board meeting in White Rock.

    The issue surrounding field usage began to simmer last year following a large-scale employee picnic held by Los Alamos National Laboratory during which the track was damaged.

    County Administrator Max Baker submitted a letter of concern to Superintendent Mary McLeod in December.

  • Injured skier airlifted to hospital

    A 45-year-old Los Alamos man sustained a head injury at about 3 p.m. Friday while skiing at Pajarito Mountain Ski Hill.

    The Pajarito Mountain Ski Patrol stabilized the man and contacted the Los Alamos Fire Department through the Los Alamos County Consolidated Dispatch Center.

    LAFD Firefighter Cress Lee, Driver Engineer Mark Whitcomb and Driver Engineer Kelly Grace-Meyer responded to the scene, as did Los Alamos Police officers Doug Ehler and Monica Salazar.

  • Police take down local meth lab

    An investigation that began 13 days ago led police to the Saturday morning discovery of a meth lab inside a bedroom at 3629-A Villa St.

    A photo and information about the woman at the root of the investigation, Leslie Katherine Draper, 23, was featured in Thursday’s Monitor.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers fall in 2AAAA title game

    ESPAÑOLA – The packed house at Edward Medina Gymnasium was entirely on its feet for the final minutes of the District 2AAAA boys basketball championship game.

    An estimated crowd of 3,700 watched the Española Valley Sundevils and Los Alamos Hilltoppers sweat it out through a contentious final quarter.

    With the Sundevils clinging to a 1-point lead late, Española Valley head coach Richard Martinez elected to run a 3-man weave throughout the final five minutes of the ballgame.

  • Complete Streets Workshop aims to educate

    As county and school officials wait in anticipation for the Trinity Site project agreements between Boyer and the county to be signed, another aspect of the downtown revitalization project is taking shape.

    County Planner Paul Belson, in conjunction with LA Walks Co-Chair Janie O’Rourke, the Downtown Streets Standards Committee and members of the public, held an open house last month to help educate the public about the Complete Streets program, as well as plans for making Trinity Drive more user friendly.

  • Tesla delivers first car to New Mexico owner

    It was a different world for Robert Efroymson back in September 2006 when he plumped down a hefty advance for a Tesla electric sports car, which was then expected for delivery in early 2008.

    Since then, the scientist and venture capitalist met his wife, moved to Albuquerque and had a son.

    Now he has a piece of the future.

    Tesla meanwhile had moved to Albuquerque to set up operations and then in the ups and downs of take off, moved back to California.
