  • New LAHS band director arrives

    With a picnic table at Ashley Pond ladled with food, the Los Alamos High School band parents and students celebrated Zane Meek stepping into the position of the school’s band director Tuesday.

    Meek replaces Dr. Charles Faulkner, who retired this year.

    Before acting as the band’s director, Meek was a graduate student at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

    He said he was attracted to Los Alamos because “I heard that the students and parents are very dedicated to the music program.”

  • Celebrating 60 years of artistic accomplishments

    This summer Los Alamos celebrates its 60th Anniversary and The Art Center at Fuller Lodge is getting ready to start things off with a bang.  The Art Center’s newest exhibition, “Los Alamos Yesterday and Today” opens Friday and runs through July 25.  The exhibit encompasses both the surrounding landscape and cultures integral to Los Alamos and celebrates the unique essence of Los Alamos itself.

  • Ruby K’s recognized for excellence

    Ruby K’s Bagel Café is the recipient of the Los Alamos Rotary Club’s 2009 Sonny Brown Award.

    The prestigeous award is given to a creative and successful business that demonstrates strong customer relations and a commitment to community service.

    “Ruby K’s was just what we wanted when we began looking for this year’s recipient,” selection committee chair Ralph Damiani said. “This is a business that contributes positively to the community on several levels and we are proud to present them with this award.”

  • LEDs to replace incandescent lighting across state

    New Mexico’s Department of Transportation began retrofitting 380 intersections throughout the state with Light Emitting Diodes (LED) Monday.

    DOT signed a contract with the Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources that received a grant of $5 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

  • Council gets business development update

    Economic development has been in the spotlight the past few years. Not only is the county interested in bringing businesses to the Atomic City, but so is the Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corp.

    During Tuesday night’s county council meeting, LACDC Director Kevin Holsapple and Business Development Director Patrick Sullivan, gave council a presentation on the LACDC Business Development contract.

    Los Alamos National Bank Chairman and CEO Bill Enloe was also present and spoke to council as well.

  • Golf: Senior men’s results from Cochiti, Links tourneys

    John Sutton had a pair of solid recent outings playing in the Northern New Mexico Senior Men’s Golf Association tournaments.

    Sutton, from Los Alamos, took top honors in the second flight of the NNMSMGA’s June 2 tournament, held at Pueblo de Cochiti Golf Course. To follow up, Sutton finished as the runner-up in gross score in the June 3 contest at Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe.

  • Baseball: Little League Minors tourney continues today

    The Los Alamos County Little League Minors baseball tournament continues with a pair of games tonight, while the Majors tournament is off until Thursday.

    The White Rock Phillies advanced to play the White Rock Mets tonight at Byers Field in Overlook Park, while the Los Alamos D-Backs will take on the White Rock Marlins at Lou Caveglia Field. Both games will start at 6:15 p.m.

    The D-Backs defeated the Los Alamos A’s in Monday’s first round, while the Phillies knocked off the Los Alamos Orioles.

  • Good buys at bazaar

    The sale tables for the Sombrillo Summer Bazaar are loaded with treasures of every kind. The bazaar takes place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the nursing and rehabilitation center, located at 1011 Sombrillo Court. Shoppers will find appliances, home and office furniture, toys, exercise and sport equipment, clothing and decorations. There will also be a bake sale.

    Additionally, Patti Cake the Clown will entertain children with face painting and games and the Scottish Dancers will perform. This is a gala family event that can be enjoyed by all ages.

    Mining underpins our way of life. Nature may be the champion excavator, if one considers sculpted peaks and canyons. But with man-made mines like the Berkeley pit in Butte, Mont., man gets an “A” for effort. And then too, mines linger on, because they are frequently not adequately cleaned up afterward, even in violation of regulations and statutes.
