  • LA hopes third time's the charm against Bernalillo

    Tonight’s District 2-4A semifinal boys basketball game could be a war and the Los Alamos Hilltoppers have their trenches all ready.
    Los Alamos will take on the Bernalillo Spartans tonight for the right to advance to the district tournament championship game. Tip-off time is 7 p.m. in Bernalillo.
    Tonight’s game will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams. Bernalillo has prevailed in both meetings, but Los Alamos had chances in both to pull off upsets.
    Whether Los Alamos (11-16 overall, 4-5 in 2-4A) can pull of the upset, as well as build on the momentum it captured following a big win over Española Valley Tuesday night, remains to be seen.

  • Bob Davie hires two assistant coaches

    ALBUQUERQUE — University of New Mexico head coach Bob Davie has announced the promotion of assistant coach Jeff Mills to defensive coordinator.
    Mills came to UNM in January after serving three years as secondary coach at the University of Washington.
    Davie also has completed his coaching staff with the hiring of Kevin Cosgrove as inside linebackers coach.
    Mills has 10 years’ experience as a defensive coordinator at Idaho, Nevada and Youngstown State. In 1998, Mills’ defense at Idaho led the Big West Conference in scoring defense and sacks as the team won the conference title with a 9-3 record.

    Authorities say 9-year-old Savannah Hardin died after being forced to run for three hours as punishment for having lied to her grandmother about eating candy bars. Severely dehydrated, the Alabama girl had a seizure and died days later.

  • Copter collision kills 7 Marines in Calif. desert

    SAN DIEGO (AP) — Two military helicopters collided over the California desert during nighttime training exercises, killing seven Marines in the latest of several similar accidents in the region.

    The service members with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing were based at Camp Pendleton north of San Diego, Lt. Maureen Dooley with Miramar Air Base in California said Thursday. The crash happened around 8 p.m. Wednesday and involved an AH-1W Cobra that carries two crew members and a UH-1 Huey utility helicopter carrying the other five.

  • Romney seeks tea party votes, Santorum hunts cash

    MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Launched by a bitter debate, Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney are powering into a crucial stretch of Republican primaries and caucuses, one man badly needing money and the other anxious to win over conservative voters.

    Romney was turning his focus Thursday to tea partyers in Michigan, his birthplace, where cash-strapped Santorum is waging an unexpectedly strong challenge. Romney's been put on the defensive in the auto-building state over his opposition to the government's bailout of car makers.

  • Pregnant mom busted with cocaine in Espanola

    ESPANOLA, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say a pregnant mother, who's already on probation for the death of her two-year-old child, is facing drug charges after police found cocaine on her and two kids in her car.

    KOAT-TV reports that probation and parole officers arrested Rose Garcia and her boyfriend, Joe Martinez, at a Sonic in Espanola on Wednesday.

    Police said the pair has six grams of cocaine on them and two kids in her car. Investigators said they believed the two were dealing cocaine.

    It was unclear if either had attorneys.

  • At least 7 Marines killed as choppers collide in Arizona

    YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — Seven Marines were killed late Wednesday in a collision of two helicopters near Yuma, Ariz., during night training exercises, the Marine Corps said Thursday.

    Lt. Maureen Dooley with Miramar Air Base in California said the service members with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing were based at Camp Pendleton north of San Diego. The crash involved an AH-1W "Cobra" and UH-1 "Huey" helicopter, she said.

    The aircraft collided in a remote portion of the Yuma Training Range Complex.

    "We're still gathering a lot of details as the sun comes up," Dooley said.

    It will be at least 24 hours before the Marine Corps releases the names of those killed, she said.

    GOP convention

    The Los Alamos Republicans will hold their pre-primary convention Thursday at the VFW, 1793 Deacon St. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. and doors close promptly at 7 p.m.   A Central Committee meeting will be at 7 p.m.
    PRC meeting

    New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) member, Douglas J. Howe, will host a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. today at Fuller Lodge to discuss renewable energy development in New Mexico.

    Dem convention

    Los Alamos Democratic Party will have its county convention at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hilltop House. They will meet in wards and choose delegates to attend the State Democratic Pre-Primary Convention on March 10, in Albuquerque.
