  • Bandelier thief sentenced

    In July 2009, law enforcement rangers at Bandelier National Monument, acting on an anonymous tip, initiated an investigation into the illegal collection of natural and cultural resources from National Park Service (NPS) lands. 

    Based on that initial investigation a suspect, William Smith Sr., was identified and was alleged to have stolen property from multiple National Parks, including Bandelier National Monument, Yellowstone National Park, Petrified Forest National Park, and Richmond National Battlefield Park.

  • Bandelier Begins Pile Burning Today

    Superintendent Jason Lott of Bandelier National Monument announced that Bandelier began burning piles of mechanically thinned vegetation  today along N.M. 4 from Ponderosa Campground to the Apache Springs Trailhead. 

    “Hundreds of piles on the west side of  N.M. 4 will be ignited this winter as conditions permit,” Lott said.

    There are approximately 135 acres containing materials cut during thinning projects last fall that need to be burned

  • Heroin deaths among young worries NM officials

    SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico health officials say they are worried about a statistically significant rise in the number of heroin overdose deaths among people under age 21.

    Health Secretary Alfredo Vigil says only about 2 percent of heroin deaths were in people in that age group from 2004 though 2007. But the percentage rose to 8 percent in 2008 and 12 percent last year.

    Vigil says in a statement that substance abuse prevention is key to preventing such deaths.

  • Company recalls meat sent to NM businesses

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture says a company is recalling thousands of pounds of meat sent to businesses in New Mexico.

    The agency's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Friday that Dallas-based Winn Meat Co. was recalling 25,600 pounds of ground beef products that were improperly labeled and potentially adulterated.

    The agency says in a statement that the meat posed a low health risk and it has received no reports of illness linked to it.

  • Update on road conditions, closings

    Los Alamos National Laboratory announced on its emergency hotline that it will be closed today.

    A strong winter storm pushed through the area dumping approximately 8-10 inches of snow overnight.

    Light snow continues to fall this morning, but the storm system is moving out of the area and precipitation is expected to end by noon.

    As of 5:51 a.m., Los Alamos Public Schools is on a delay due to weather condition.

    All elementary and middle school classes will start two hours late and Los Alamos High School classes will start at 10 a.m.

    The National Weather Service issued the following Special Weather Warning:

    A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 AM MST FRIDAY.

    * SNOW ACCUMULATIONS... STORM TOTAL 10 TO 18 INCHES WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS UP TO 2 FEET OVER WEST FACING SLOPES... ESPECIALLY THE JEMEZ MOUNTAINS.

    * TIMING... SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING BEFORE DISSIPATING. THE GREATEST ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED THIS EVENING THROUGH EARLY FRIDAY MORNING.

    12:32 p.m. — A 45-year-old Los Alamos woman reported that her home was burglarized and a vehicle also was taken. The estimated loss is more than $2,500.

    7:10 p.m. — Kristina Amer, 21, of El Rancho was arrested by New Mexico State Police on an active probation violation warrant.

  • Crash between car, ambulance kills 1 south of SF

    SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Santa Fe police say one woman is dead in a crash involving an ambulance and a car on Interstate 25 south of Santa Fe, and two others are hospitalized.

    Police Chief Aric Wheeler says a driver was headed the wrong way on the interstate and crashed head-on into the ambulance about 2:30 Tuesday morning.

    Police say one of the two women in the car was killed.

    No names have been released.

    Police shut down the northbound lanes of the interstate in the area.

  • FIRE DAMAGES ICONIC HILL DINER

    A fire erupted in the kitchen at Hill Diner Monday evening. Manager Leanne Nichols knew that crewmembers from Fire Station 6 were eating in the restaurant at the time and rushed to their table for help as the fire grew out of control.
    “She realized that our kitchen fire extinguisher wasn’t stopping the fire and remembered that we had firefighters eating in the dining room,” owner Denise Lane said during an interview at the restaurant this morning.

    NEW YORK (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration is missing key information on who owns one-third of the 357,000 private and commercial aircraft in the U.S. — a gap the agency fears could be exploited by terrorists and drug traffickers.
