    3:05 p.m. – Los Alamos National Laboratory reported the theft of tools and equipment from a locked toolbox on LANL property. The estimated damage is unknown.

    3:47 p.m. – Thomas Winfrey, 26, was arrested at 999 Central Ave., on an outstanding federal warrant from another jurisdiction for allegedly assaulting a minor.

  • Bitterly cold temps greet New Year in Los Alamos

    As the New Year began, bitterly cold temperatures were on hand to greet any revelers who may have been brave enough to venture out to welcome 2011.

    At the stroke of midnight temperatures dipped to -4 degrees,  according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration instruments at Los Alamos Airport. That was warmer than earlier in the evening when the mercury dipped to -9 before winds calmed just prior to midnight.

  • Severe driving conditions on No. NM highways Friday

    SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The state transportation department reports severe driving conditions Friday morning on New Mexico State Highway 434 from Angel Fire to Black Lake.

    It's snowing heavily and roads are snow packed and icy.

    Winds are blowing at 40 mph, there whiteout conditions with visibility at zero feet. Crews are plowing, salting, and sanding the road. Motorists are to use caution and reduce their speed in this area.

    U.S. 64 has severe driving conditions from Taos pass to Cimarron Pass.

  • Road crews prep for winter storm

    SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Highway crews are preparing for a winter storm approaching New Mexico.

    State Transportation Secretary Gary Giron (Hee ROHN') says snow plows and crews are ready to hit the highway as soon as the storm rolls in.

    The National Weather Service says the winter storm is expected to hit portions of western and northern New Mexico Wednesday afternoon through Thursday.

    Heavy snowfall, strong to damaging winds and very cold temperatures are expected.

  • Martinez names warden to lead NM corrections

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Gov.-elect Susana Martinez has chosen the warden at the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility in Grants to lead the state Department of Corrections.

    If the nomination is confirmed by the state Senate, Lupe Martinez, 49, would become the first woman confirmed as a corrections secretary in New Mexico's history.

    If the nomination is confirmed by the state Senate, Lupe Martinez would become the first woman confirmed as a corrections secretary in New Mexico's history.

    Lupe Martinez, no relation to the governor-elect, has 25 years of experience in the corrections department.

  • Difficult driving conditions in No. NM Friday

    SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The state transportation department says several roadways are snow packed in northern New Mexico.

    U.S. 64 has difficult driving conditions with about two inches of snow and it continues to snow lightly.

    New Mexico state road 434 has difficult driving conditions. It is snowing and the road has two inches of accumulation.

    Crews are plowing, salting and sanding the roadway. Motorists should drive with caution and reduce their speed.

  • Va. man sentenced for violations at Bandelier

    In July 2009, law enforcement rangers at Bandelier National Monument, acting on an anonymous tip, initiated an investigation into the illegal collection of natural and cultural resources from National Park Service (NPS) lands. Based on that initial investigation a suspect, William Smith Sr., was identified and was alleged to have stolen property from multiple National Parks, including Bandelier National Monument, Yellowstone National
    Park, Petrified Forest National Park, and Richmond National Battlefield Park.
