  • Main Hill Road reopens to all traffic--exclusive video added

    County crews faced the daunting task of not only repairing a ruptured water line, but also filling in a large sinkhole, but nonetheless, the Main Hill Road reopened to all east and westbound traffic at 4:30 p.m.

    Los Alamos County officials report that they were notified of a water main break at 1 a.m. Monday morning that caused the Main Hill Road to be shut down.

  • Lt. Reggie Briggle retires after 20 years of service

    Retirement ceremonies take on a variety of tones from somber to jubilant. Friday’s ceremony honoring newly retired Los Alamos Police Lt. Reggie Briggle’s ran the gamut.
    The standing-room-only crowd assembled in the police station to express their gratitude and say their farewells, joked, weeped and shared many memories with the longtime police officer.

    8:37 a.m. – A 14-year-old Los Alamos boy is part of a child abuse investigation.

    11:38 a.m. – A 52-year-old Los Alamos woman reported the theft of apparel from TA-46, Building 535 at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The estimated loss is less than $2,500.

  • Student busted with weapons

    Police intercepted a student at his home early last Thursday morning who reportedly intended to bring a gun to school that day. A report came in to the station at about 7 a.m. in reference to a text from a student stating that the police must be called right away.

    The text indicated that LAHS student Kyle William Medrick purchased a gun on Wednesday to take to Los Alamos High School Thursday.

    According to the police statement of probable cause, Medrick, 18, also had threatened other students with knives as well as an 8-inch pair of scissors recently.

    9:03 a.m. – A 61-year-old Los Alamos woman reported that someone stole the catalytic converter from her vehicle while it was parked overnight on Iris Street. The estimated loss is less than $2,500.

  • BATHTUB ROW STANDOFF ENDS WITHOUT INCIDENT

    Los Alamos Police have successfully concluded negotiations with a local man who had barricaded himself inside a residence at 1350 Bathtub Row.

    Officers staked out the home and apprehended Richard Morse when he exited to dispose of his trash at a receptacle in his front yard at about noon today.

    Morse, 75, is a former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist who worked on the W-76 thermonuclear warhead in the 1970s and 1980s. He has been a longtime critic of the weapon saying a design flaw involving a "too thin casing," made it unstable.

  • BATHTUB ROW STANDOFF ENDS WITHOUT INCIDENT

    Los Alamos Police have successfully concluded negotiations with a local man who had barricaded himself inside a residence at 1350 Bathtub Row. Police subdued Richard Morse shortly before noon when he left his residence to dispose of some trash.

    Police officials said Morse, 75, had threatened to shoot police, but that no shots were fired since the situation began unfolding at about 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

  • Drivers warned of snowy conditions in northern NM

    SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Snow and ice are making for difficult driving conditions in northern New Mexico's high country.

    The state Department of Transportation says crews were out Monday morning along sections of Interstate 25 plowing snow and spreading salt and cinders on the roadways.

    It is snowing heavily along a 60 mile stretch of the highway from Colmor to Raton and drivers are asked to slow down and be extra careful.

  • Thieves target local Toyotas

    Over the last two nights, thieves have crawled underneath four older model Toyota trucks and SUVs parked in Los Alamos neighborhoods and cut off the vehicles’ catalytic converters.  
    “The catalytic converters used on Toyota trucks and SUVs in the 1980s and 1990s were made from precious metal,” Capt. Randy Foster said. “It’s an easy part to get at so it’s become a popular item to steal.”
