  • LANL Protester Trial Put On Hold

    The Feb. 8 trial has been placed on hold for six of the eight people arrested and charged with state misdemeanor trespassing after staging a sit-in at Los Alamos National Laboratory Aug. 6.

    The eight protesters were arrested after sitting on the ground with their arms and hands locked together blocking the door to the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building. They volunteered to be arrested, were cited and released that same day. Two later pled no contest and were sentenced to fines and probation.

  • Sparky the Fire Dog turns 60

     Quincy, Mass.—March 18 marks the 60th birthday of Sparky the Fire Dog, the official mascot of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), who has been teaching children, parents and teachers on fire prevention and public safety for the past six decades.
    To kick-off this year-long celebration, today, the NFPA is launching a “Voice of Sparky” contest to find one special firefighter to be the voice behind this iconic Dalmatian spokesdog.

    Emergency shelters have been set up at these locations for residents unable to safely remain at home. These heated facilities will have cots, blankets, food and water, and other emergency relief in coordination with the Red Cross and/or National Guard.

  • Gov. Martinez declares state of emergency, government offices closed Friday as natural gas crisis continues

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — With tens of thousands of people across New Mexico without natural gas service, Gov. Susana Martinez on Thursday declared a state of emergency, ordered government offices be shut down Friday and urged schools to "strongly consider" remaining closed for the day.

    Demand has soared because of extremely cold weather across the state since Tuesday. New Mexico Gas Company said rolling blackouts in West Texas also impeded the delivery of natural gas to New Mexico.

  • Los Alamos County sets up shelter location as natural gas cutoffs affect thousands across New Mexico

    Tens of thousands of people across New Mexico were without natural gas service Thursday, and the crisis continues Friday.

    Los Alamos County has activated the Emergency Operations Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory in order to coordinate resources and closely monitor the community’s gas supply situation during these low and dangerously cold temperatures.

  • LANL, County Bomb Teams Join Forces

    An effort has been underway to re-establish the partnership that existed between the Los Alamos Police Department and Los Alamos National Laboratory bomb teams.
    “The LAPD has been working on rejoining forces with the lab’s bomb team for the last four or five months,” said Lt. Preston Ballew, commander of the LAPD Bomb Squad.

    11:45 a.m. – Richard Morse, 75, of Los Alamos was arrested on an outstanding District Court Warrant following a 19-hour standoff with police.

  • Snow leaves difficult driving conditions in NM

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Difficult driving conditions are being reported around New Mexico on Tuesday in the wake of a winter storm that has hit much of the state with snow and bitterly cold temperatures.

    State Transportation Department crews are plowing and sanding highways, and drivers are being urged to use caution.

    Much of Interstates 40 and 25 through the state are reported as snow-packed and icy.

    Many schools throughout New Mexico were on a two-hour delay.

  • Main Hill Road reopens to all traffic--exclusive video added

    County crews faced the daunting task of not only repairing a ruptured water line, but also filling in a large sinkhole, but nonetheless, the Main Hill Road reopened to all east and westbound traffic at 4:30 p.m.

    Los Alamos County officials report that they were notified of a water main break at 1 a.m. Monday morning that caused the Main Hill Road to be shut down.
