  • Bill targets teen drug users

    Teenage addiction to heroin and prescription drugs is hitting epidemic levels throughout New Mexico, according to experts. A bill from Albuquerque Sen. Bernadette Sanchez, D-Bernalillo aimed at treating the problem passed the New Mexico Senate 31-3 Thursday.

    SB 232 buprenorphine treatment for opioid addiction is meant to counter the soaring heroin addiction problem in the state, Sanchez said.

  • Saudi suspect in terror plot appears in fed. court

    LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — A college student from Saudi Arabia accused of buying chemicals online as part of a plan to blow up key U.S. targets, including the home of former President George W. Bush, appeared in federal court in Texas on Friday.

    Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

    Rod Hobson, his attorney, declined to comment as he left the courtroom in Lubbock. In a statement, he said the "eyes of the world are on this case" and how Aldawsari is treated.

  • Committee clears police training bill

    An escalating issue facing law enforcement in Los Alamos and communities across the state has prompted the introduction of a bill addressing how law enforcement should handle citizens exhibiting signs of mental impairment.

    Rep. Edward Sandoval, D-Albuquerque and Sen. David Ulibarri, D-Grants introduced the bill, which would establish training guidelines for police officers involving specialized handling of situations where people are mentally impaired.

    HB 93 unanimously cleared its final committee Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee.

  • Senate confirms NM homeland security secretary

    SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The Senate has confirmed retired Air Force Col. Michael Duvall as secretary of the state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

    Duvall is the third member of Republican Gov. Susana Martinez's cabinet to win confirmation.

    The Senate voted unanimously on Wednesday in favor of Duvall's nomination.

    He was commander of the 377th Air Base Wing at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque from July 2008 to April 2010, when he retired.

    Duvall is a 1984 Air Force Academy graduate.

  • Bill works to reduce repeat DWIs

    Santa Fe – Rep. Sheryl Williams Stapleton looks to reduce the number of DWI repeat offenders by instituting a first offender follow-up program.  
    The bill she is sponsoring, House Bill 183, unanimously passed the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee today.

  • One-vehicle rollover snarls traffic

    The Santa Fe County Sheriffís Office said alcohol may have been a contributing factor in a one-vehicle rollover crash that snarled traffic on NM 502 Tuesday afternoon.
    Corporal Bill Ritch said Wednesday morning that Dolores Montano, 61, of Los Alamos, was driving east on NM 502 when she lost control of her vehicle, crossed the median and hit the guard rail. The vehicle flipped over the guard rail into a ditch at mile post 9, near the Totavi 66 gas station.

  • Beware of bears heading to town

    The aroma of discarded meat products permeating through back yard trash cans is too much temptation for bears coming out of hibernation with big appetites.

    “The lack of precipitation this winter and presumably through spring and summer will cause bears to come in to town in search of food,” said Conservation Officer Blake Swanson with New Mexico Game and Fish. “We want to educate the public of steps they can take to help avoid attracting bears into their yards.”
