  • AIR QUALITY IMPACTS MAINLY TO SOUTHWEST NM MONDAY

    THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE NEW MEXICO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL DEPARTMENT.

    AIR QUALITY IMPACTS FROM ONGOING WILDFIRES WILL CONTINUE TODAY BUT BECOME MORE CONFINED TO THE SOUTHWEST QUADRANT OF NEW MEXICO.

    THE EXPECTED DECREASE IN WIND SPEEDS AND MORE WESTERLY DIRECTION OF THE WIND... AND POTENTIALLY DECREASING SMOKE FROM THE EASTERN ARIZONA WILDFIRES... WILL CHANGE THE EXTENT OF THE IMPACT TODAY. THIS COMBINATION OF FACTORS IS EXPECTED TO CARRY THE SMOKE IN A MORE EASTERLY DIRECTION... LIMITING PRIMARY IMPACTS SOUTH OF I 40 AND WEST OF THE NEW MEXICO CENTRAL MOUNTAIN CHAIN.

    Diamond Drive Phase 4 2011
    Canyon Closure at Diamond: On June 6, the contractor will be closing both legs of Canyon Road at Diamond Drive. Eastbound Canyon traffic can access Canyon Road from Trinity at 39th Street.
    All driveways on Canyon will remain open except the High School Jock Lot (Griffith Gym). Westbound Canyon through traffic should detour to Trinity at either Oppenheimer or 39th Street. Access the First Methodist Church via University Drive.

  • Los Alamos among counties under expanded state fire restrictions--video extras

    SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico officials are expanding restrictions on fireworks, smoking, campfires and other open fires to all of the state's 33 counties.

    State Forester Tony Delfin and New Mexico Energy Secretary John Bemis announced the additional restrictions Thursday. They will go into effect Friday morning.

    State restrictions were first enacted in April and included 29 counties where fire danger was highest.

    San Juan, Rio Arriba, Taos, Los Alamos and western Colfax Counties weren't included in the original restriction order because those areas had received winter moisture and weren't experiencing high incidence of wildfire.

  • Red skies illuminate Los Alamos sunset

    Thursday afternoon's hazy sky with its bright reddish-orange hue is reminiscent of the skies that filled the local area during the Cerro Grande Fire 11 years ago.

    Fire Marshal/Assistant Fire Chief Michael Thompson explained that the eerie sky is cause by smoke from a massive fire burning in Arizona, which is being blown into Los Alamos by strong winds.

    The Associated Press reports that the U.S. Forest Service says the Wallow wildfire in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona has burned more than 100,000 acres or 165 square miles.

    Forest Service spokeswoman Mary Johnson in Alpine tells AP that no buildings in the scenic mountain community have been lost.

  • State police identify suspect killed in Pojoaque shoot-out with deputies--video extra

    New Mexico State Police told the Los Alamos Monitor  that a man suspected of robbing alcohol from the Kokoman Fine Wine & Liquor store in the Pojoaque Valley Thursday afternoon was killed during a gunshot exchange with Santa Fe sheriffs.

    Lenny Carreno, 23, of Pojoaque Valley died at the scene following a car-chase and shoot out with law enforcement officers.

    New Mexico State Police took over the investigation and said the robbery occurred about 3 p.m.

    It remains unclear how many shots were fired or if anyone else besides the suspect was hit.

    3:48 p.m. – A 40-year-old Los Alamos woman reported that she was the victim of larceny in the 3000 block of Urban. The estimated loss is less than $2,500.

    May 20

    11:16 a.m. A 73-year-old Los Alamos woman reported that she was bitten by a dog on Estante Way. The dog has been impounded.

    6:24 p.m. – A 15-year-old Los Alamos boy reported that someone broke in to his residence on Taos Drive. The estimated loss is unknown.

  • Park emergency road plan scaled down

    The potential for crisis during the Fourth of July extravaganza at Overlook Park is driving fire officials to create an emergency access route. At least 8,000 people attend the annual event put on by the Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos.

    “The reason that we believe it’s necessary to have an additional ingress and egress in that area is because it’s the site of the largest event in this county. We’ve got a chokehold at the main entry and God forbid there’s a catastrophic medical event in which we’ve got to transport multiple patients,” Fire Chief Doug Tucker said. “We have to look at the worse case scenario and prepare for such an event.”

SANDIA/MANZANO MOUNTAINS... CENTRAL HIGHLANDS... SOUTH CENTRAL MOUNTAINS AND HIGHLANDS... RATON RIDGE/JOHNSON MESA... NORTHEAST HIGHLANDS... EASTERN LINCOLN COUNTY... SOUTHWEST CHAVES COUNTY

    * WINDS... SOUTHWEST WINDS OF 25 TO NEARLY 40 MPH WITH GUSTS OF 50 TO 55 MPH.

    * TIMING... WINDS WILL REACH ADVISORY SPEEDS THIS MIDDAY AND THEN WILL CONTINUE THROUGH EARLY THIS EVENING. WINDS WILL DIMINISH SLOWLY AFTER DARK.

    * VISIBILITY... OCCASIONALLY LOWERING TO BETWEEN 1 AND 3 MILES SUNDAY DUE TO BLOWING DUST.
