LAPD chief: drug use is rampant

At a forum Wednesday night about illegal drugs in the community, held at the Duane Smith Auditorium, one thing became abundantly clear: Los Alamos is awash in illicit drugs.
The forum was organized by Los Alamos Police Chief Dino Sgambellone and the Los Alamos Police Department. It featured various community members and experts speaking about their experiences.
Those included Sgambellone, Linda Peña, a parole officer in Los Alamos County, Dr. Sara Pasqualoni, a parent, and Matthew Weinman, a teacher’s aide who spoke to the audience about his struggles with drug addiction.
While residents commended the speakers for sharing their experiences and advice, many wanted to know what is being done to curb access to illegal drugs, especially in the school system.
One of the more frightening facts to come out of the discussion was that cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, marijuana and powerful painkillers such as oxycontin are readily available.
