Attempts to fill retired Superintendent James Anderson’s substantial shoes proved unsuccessful and led the Los Alamos Board of Education to convince Assistant Superintendent Mary McLeod to take the reins for at least one year.

Many notables expressed appreciation for Anderson’s contributions, including New Mexico’s congressional delegation.

Business leader Roger Waterman described Los Alamos as having been blessed that Anderson led the schools for 14 years.

Employees from Los Alamos County’s Public Works Department, members of the LA Walks group, Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation (LACDC) and the public celebrated the completion of the Phase 2 Central Avenue Streetscapes and Pedestrian Crossings project during a special ceremony at the Community Building Thursday.

Veronica Rodriguez spent more than a decade working for New Mexico’s beloved Sen. Pete Domenici. He retires Dec. 31 and as with the rest of his longtime staff, she had to seek new employment. Rodriguez began working at Los Alamos National Bank in October.

During an interview in her new office, Rodriguez reminisced about her years with Domenici and her life today.

Some 400 family, friends and fellow firefighters honored 29  new fire cadets to the Los Alamos Fire Department during a  special ceremony at Duane Smith Auditorium Saturday. The 19th recruitment class is comprised of two women and 27 men.

"The biggest challenge for me, being a smaller size, was the physical portion of our training - but I did it," Fire Cadet Emmy Sweers said. "It's amazing how much they are able to train us during the 20-week academy. My favorite part was going down to Socorro and working with live fires."
