  • Energy Department contracts hospital to save workers’ records

    Former employees of Los Alamos National Laboratory with claims against the federal government for work-related illnesses won a longstanding grievance last week.

    Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M. reported that the Los Alamos Medical Center has been awarded a $999,999 contract by the Department of Energy to help salvage thousands of old medical and exposure records in the hospital basement and a nearby warehouse.

  • Hilltop Shopping Center is open and ready for customers

    The summer of 2008 was not an easy one for business people at the Hilltop Shopping Center, with orange barrels, detours, bulldozers, cement barriers, truck-sized holes in the ground, flaggers and signs directing people every which way, making it hard for customers to visit their favorite restaurants during the Diamond Drive Phase II construction.

  • LANL director updates state

    SANTA FE – State lawmakers got an up-to-the-minute snapshot of the outlook at Los Alamos National Laboratory as they prepared for a 60-day legislative session just around the corner.

    The LANL oversight committee heard an upbeat report from lab Director Michael Anastasio Friday and quizzed him for any clues about what the economic future might look like for northern New Mexico.

  • Overall survey results favorable for LA County

    Los Alamos County is a good place to live. At least that’s what residents are saying, according to a survey conducted by a Colorado firm.

    The county has been conducting citizen satisfaction surveys for several years.

    The purpose of the citizen survey is to gather public opinion on a variety of subjects, including satisfaction with county services and programs.

    When possible, the information gained by the survey is used by the county to help guide the county’s goals for service improvement.

  • GOP women tap Johnson for top post

    Los Alamos Federation of Republican Women installed new officers Thursday during a special ceremony at the Hilltop House Hotel.

    Longtime Republican Party leader JoAnn Johnson is the organization’s new president. Immediate past president, Marie Todd, is now vice president, Norma Tech is the organization’s secretary and Cathy Walters is the treasurer.

    New Mexico’s National Committee Woman, Rosie Tripp, traveled from Socorro to attend the installation of new officers.

  • Council proclaims West day

    Thoughtful words were plentiful and a heartfelt outpouring of good wishes for a speedy recovery were heard in council chambers Tuesday during the recognition and proclamation of the service given to the county by former Councilor Jim West.

    “This is a proclamation that I read with a heavy heart,” Council Chairman Jim Hall said. “Jim couldn’t be here because he’s not feeling well,” he continued. He also said that West told him that he’d watch the meeting from home.

  • Cat survives plague

    “He’s doing fine and is basically all well,” said Veterinarian Dan Dessauer of The Animal Clinic of Los Alamos. “If you catch it early, put the animal in isolation and start a treatment of antibiotics, it’s something that’s not too difficult to cure.”

    The cat was a little more than one year old, he said, adding that no one at the animal clinic was infected by the cat.

  • Bratcher named preserve director

    The governing board of the Valles Caldera Preserve held its last meeting of the year Thursday and most likely the final meeting for several trustees whose terms are ending early next year.

    Valles Caldera Trust Chair William Kelleher of Albuquerque announced that Gary Bratcher had been hired to fill the vacant post of executive director. Bratcher, an Artesia native, served as economic development secretary under former Gov. Gary Johnson from 1995-1998 and then was appointed to a vacancy on the New Mexico Lottery Authority.

  • Petition to stop JPJ Complex construction shot down

    Despite an effort by some local residents to stop construction of the Judicial/Police/Jail Complex, the show will go on.

     

    County Councilors voted 5-1 in favor of proceeding with construction of the complex. The only one who voted against it was Council Vice Chairman Robert Gibson.
