  • Blowing out 60 candles

    Flames from 60 candles flickered and danced on a pale blue birthday cake Friday at Fuller Lodge to celebrate Los Alamos’ 60th anniversary.

    Members of the community, young and old, came to wish the town a happy birthday and help blow the candles out.

    Fuller Lodge was decked to the nines for the party, which was sponsored by the county, Los Alamos National Bank and Los Alamos National Security LLC. On the lawn were inflatable jumping games for children and blue and white balloons.

  • ChamberFest creates reflection of decades

    The Chamber of Commerce Banquet drew officials, their staff and their spouses from top organizations to Central Avenue Grill Friday evening. The event reflected on past decades as part of the county's 60-year birthday celebration.

    The annual affair traditionally kicks off ChamberFest weekend created to celebrate the business community. It attracts the masses to the downtown area for family fun including jolly jumpers and a large sand pile for the kids along with music, food and shopping for everyone.

  • Bringing the Manhattan Project to the classroom

    For the first time, teachers from New Mexico and Colorado had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history of the Manhattan Project for future use in their classrooms.

    Made possible by the Atomic Heritage Foundation, the group of 25 educators spent three days in Santa Fe at St. John’s College, making their way to Los Alamos where they toured various properties and absorbed information about the Manhattan Project.

    The teachers have diverse plans for how they will put what they learned at the workshop to use in their classrooms.

  • Valles Caldera trust returns to public access

    The Valles Caldera Trust took a few more jabs from its critics at a standing-room only public meeting Thursday night at the Hilltop House, while announcing plans for several improvements.

    Trustees muted their recent emphasis on commercial development projects on the public property, and Gary Bratcher, the Valles Caldera’s executive director, said he was serious about trying to help Dorothy Hoard of Los Alamos realize her vision of a 78-mile rim trail around the entire Valles Caldera Preserve.

  • KRSN nails first hurdle in quest to house satellite off North Mesa

    A packed room full of supporters cheered along with the owners of KRSN AM 1490 as the Parks and Recreation Board unanimously approved a request that essentially moves along the process for the station to acquire land at Loma Linda Park to house its satellite.

    Transferring the satellite from its current location in White Rock to the town site will greatly enhance reception, owner David Sutton said, adding that reception in White Rock can be maintained through the purchase of a 10-watt booster.

  • School Board meets Friday

    The Los Alamos Board of Education has called a special meeting for 9 a.m. Friday in the district boardroom at 751 Trinity Drive.

    The purpose of the meeting is to Budget Adjustment Requests.

    The meeting is open to the public.

  • Health study meets on draft final report

    A decade-long study by the Centers for Disease Control is drawing to a conclusion.

    The Los Alamos Historical Document Retrieval and Assessment (LAHDRA) project has issued its final draft report and has announced that the study team will hold a public meeting on June 25 to discuss the project status, the draft report and findings and the peer review process that is now underway.

  • NM502/DP Road project to begin in 2011

    New Mexico Department of Transportation improvements to NM502/DP Road have been put on hold for a couple of years.

    During Tuesday night’s county council meeting, NMDOT Tech Support Engineer David Martinez and Project Development Engineer David Quintana presented council with an update and laid out plans for what’s in store for that stretch of road.

  • School Board breezes through Tuesday night’s agenda

    Three of the five school board members attending Tuesday’s regular meeting in the district boardroom whipped through the topics, unanimously passing several in short order.

    A $5,000 funding transfer for Los Alamos Middle School’s cafeteria program, the 2009-2010 budget and a one-year lease extension for Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) were all approved.

    Board Secretary Jodie Benson led the meeting as President Joan Ahlers and Vice President Ken Johnson were absent.
