        Rep. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) sits on the House Armed Services Committee and he offered his take on the two amendments proposed by Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) this week concerning the Chemistry Metallurgy Research Replacement facility that is in the process of being shelved at Los Alamos National Lab.

  • New pub and grill preps to open on the Hill -- updated

    The dearth of late-night dining and entertainment venues in Los Alamos may be about to change if a group of local entrepreneurs has anything to say about it.

    “We’re pretty excited,” local entrepreneur Patrick Mockler-Wood said.

    The southeast corner of the Mari-Mac Center next to Trinity Drive in the old Blockbuster will be the home of new restaurant, Pajarito Brewpub and Grill.

    “It’s one of the most passed stores in Los Alamos,” he said. “Anyone coming in and out of town has passed the spot.”

    Mockler-Wood said the restaurant and bar has been his dream since he moved back to Los Alamos in 2007.

    A 9-year-old Alabama girl was found hanged from a tree with an old tire swing rope, deliberately, authorities say, by her 14-year-old half-brother who was charged with murder. At least one neighbor is stunned by the allegations.

  • Burgess moves to further reorganize county government

    In a move to further solidify his management team and restructure the machinations of the local government, County Administrator Harry Burgess announced additional re-organization plans to employees this week.

    The moves were primarily housekeeping in terms of reporting structure changes, now that he has promoted Brian Bosshardt and Steve Lynne to be his two new Deputy County Administrators.

    Reporting to Deputy County Administrator Brian Bosshardt will be these departments: Community Services, Public Works, and Human Resources. The Human Resources Manager had previously been a direct report to the county administrator.

    Officers searching for two girls abducted from their Tennessee home say they were combing the woods behind a church when Adam Mayes, 12-year-old Alexandria Bain and 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain were spotted face down on the ground.

  • UNM-LA holds graduation -- program attached

    UNM-Los Alamos celebrated its 31st annual Graduation Convocation on May 10, 2012. Five students received bachelor’s degrees, 39 received associate degrees, 5 received academic certificates and 8 students received General Educational Development Diplomas.

    Convocation Speaker Dr. Chaouki T. Abdallah is the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of New Mexico. He is currently a professor and chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UNM.
