  • Underground line fault causes outage

    Officials from the Los Alamos Dept. of Public Utilities reported a power outage that began at 3:52 p.m. Wednesday in the Eastern Area. The outage affected 98 customers in an area bounded by Myrtle, Rim and Canyon Roads. An underground line fault at Piñon Road caused the electric interruption.
    Power was restored to all but 20 of those customers by 4:45 p.m. At 6:45 p.m. power was restored to the remaining 20 customers on Piñon and Rim Roads.
    DPU officials also noted that this outage was caused by aging underground infrastructure and is not related to the construction work underway in the Eastern Area.

    Rep. Martin Heinrich D-N.M.) greeted White Rock residents and later took part in a fundraiser in White Rock Saturday. Heinrich is running for the U.S. Senate seat against Republican Heather Wilson.

  • Raw Video: Oklahoma Refinery Fire

    Fire was reported at a Holly Sinclair oil refinery in Tulsa, Oklahoma early Thursday. Flames could be seen several miles away.

  • Power out in Eastern neighborhoods

    The Department of Utilities is reporting a power outage in the Eastern area neighborhoods of Los Alamos. The neighborhoods are bounded by Myrtle, Canyon and Rim Roads.

    DPU has sent out crews to investigate.

  • 15th Street to open by end of week

    After weeks of construction, an end is in sight. Paving on 15th Street between Central Ave. and Trinity Drive began Tuesday. A paving subcontractor will verify the test results of the first coat before applying the second round Thursday. The road is expected be reopened at the end of the week. Road crews will be completing concrete work and other finishing touches over the next two weeks.

    Focus On

     Doug Howe, District 3 PRC commissioner  will hold a “Focus On” meeting to discuss the new-found attention on unconventional natural gas supplies, at 7 p.m.  today in the upstairs meeting rooms at Mesa Public Library. 

    Foreign Film Series

    The Mesa Public Library Film Series presents “I Am Love,” starring Tilda Swinton, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. This will be the final movie of the Foreign Film Series. See the review on page 6.

    County Council

    The Los Alamos County Council will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 in council chambers.

  • Apprenticeship program honors Navajo Code Talker

    Northern New Mexico Citizens’ Advisory Board (NNMCAB) member Michael Loya presented a special guest last week during the board’s monthly meeting –Navajo Code Talker Jack Jones.

    Jones spoke briefly about his experiences in the South Pacific during World War II. He survived a bomb blast that damaged his hearing, his eyesight and his sense of smell.

    But Jones’ real objective for attending the meeting was winning support from NNMCAB members for an apprenticeship program that will train Navajo and other American Indian youth to build sustainable homes. Jones is 93 years old, and wishes to leave something behind that will help native people.
