  • Sex offender arrested at Ashley Pond

    Registered sex offender Victor William Loretto, 35, of Jemez Pueblo was arrested at Ashley Pond Monday morning and charged with Lewd Behavior, two counts of Assault on a Peace Officer and Public Intoxication.

    Police dispatch received a call at about 11 a.m. from a young girl who reported that Loretto was following her and three other boys and girls, ranging in age from 10-17, and saying inappropriate things to them.

    Sgt. Jason Wardlow, Cpl. Larry Baker and Ofc. Ben Hinrichs responded to the scene and located Loretto under the gazebo at the pond.

  • Reward increases to $1,000

    A private resident has added $500 to the $500 reward offered by Crime Stoppers and the Los Alamos Police Department. The $1,000 reward will be paid for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons who caused criminal damage in a June 3 flooding incident at 800 Trinity Drive. For information, call 412-5167. Callers can remain anonymous.

  • Arrest made in teen party shootout

    A man who ordered a group of Los Alamos teens to lie down on the ground and who hit two of them with the butt of a rifle was arrested at 1602 37th Street Friday following a joint search by officers from the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office and Los Alamos Police Department.

    Jeremy W. Johnson, 24, 1602 37th Street, is charged with two misdemeanors and six felonies in connection with an ongoing investigation into a teen drinking party that occurred shortly before 1 a.m. June 7.

  • Spotlight on Los Alamos: Son and medicine enrich doctor's life

    Dr. Aparimita Lahiri is often seen walking around town with her 12-year-old son Soumyo Lahiri-Gupta by her side. Whether entering Los Alamos Medical Center to admit a patient or her private practice in Central Park Square, they make a delightful pair.

    “Sometimes my patients want to meet Soumyo, so I let him come in and say hi because it brightens their day,” Lahiri said. “But most of the time he’s in the lobby area or in the nurse’s station.”

  • Municipal Court closes three days for training

    The Los Alamos Municipal Court will be closed from June 24-27 for required staff training.

    Payments due during this period of closure can be mailed to P.O. Box 30, Los Alamos, NM 87544.

    Court appearances required during this time can be rescheduled by calling 662-8024/8025/8026 either before Monday or after June 29.

    Municipal Court is located in the Community Building, 475 20th Street, and regular hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

  • Tort claim filed against county

    Adam Shipman filed a tort claim notice with the Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office Monday for damage he says was caused to his home at 2399-B 37th Street during phase II of the Diamond Drive Project. A tort claim is a federal or state act which, under certain conditions, waives governmental immunity and allows lawsuits by people who claim they have been harmed by wrongful acts including negligence, by government agencies or their employees.

    MORRIS – The memorial service for Rose Elaine Morris scheduled for today will have a start time of 12:30 p.m. rather than noon as previously stated. Refreshments will follow the service.

  • Almeda Inez Gibson Patton

    Patton – Almeda Inez Gibson Patton, 68, died Wednesday, June 10, 2008. Her home was in Durant, Okla. She was born in Lakeview, Texas, Jan. 10, 1940, to Phillip Musgrove & Inez (Messer) Gibson, now deceased. She married Donald DeWayne Patton Dec. 20, 1958. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Patton enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading and Bible study. Almeda worked for Jafra Sales as a representative, and as an election official. She was a member of the Dudes and Dolls Square Dance Club and Texoma Squares.

  • Burt Kenneth Davis

    DAVIS – Burt Kenneth Davis, 59, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away Monday, June 9, 2008, at Sombrillo Nursing Center. Burt was born Jan. 9, 1949, in Kansas City, Mo. He grew up there and was active in the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Finley Engineering College in Kansas City and after graduation began working for the Bendix Corporation there. In 1976, he transferred to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he worked until his retirement in 2006.

  • John Benjamin Cole

    COLE – John Benjamin Cole, born Sept. 13, 1919, in Tacoma, Wash., died June 2, 2008, in Ocala, Fla., of natural causes. He was a long-term resident of Los Alamos. He is survived by his wife Eva Dale Cole, formerly of Los Alamos, N.M.; sister, Marie Weeks, Vallejo, Calif.; son, Samuel Jeffrey Cole, Ocala Fla.; two grandchildren, Lani Cole Compagno and Bryan Cole; and three great-grandchildren, Patrick, Joshua and Lucas Cole. He served in the U.S. Army Aircorp and as a U.S. Air Force Command Pilot. He was a retiree of Los Alamos National Laboratory.
