    Movie in the Park

    The final 2012 Movie in the Park is set for today. The movie, “Firehouse Dog” (rated G) will be at Ashley Pond starting at dusk. Movies in the Park are sponsored by Los Alamos County’s recreation department.

    Flashers to be tested

    The Public Works Traffic Division staff will test the school flashers throughout the community Monday and Tuesday in preparation for the beginning of school on Wednesday. Questions and concerns should be directed to the Public Works Department at 662-8150 or lacpw@lacnm.us.

  • Posse Lodge nears milestone

    Friday is a big day for the Los Alamos Sheriff’s Posse Shack (now called the Los Alamos Sheriff’s Posse Lodge). That is the day the New Mexico Cultural Properties Review Committee decides whether to place the building on the State Historic Register.

    Posse Lodge President Carey Grzadinski is behind the effort to place the lodge on the historic registry and supplied much of the historical information about the building. Kelly Myers began preliminary investigations into the requirements for registry.

  • Rodgers new vice chair

    In a unanimous decision, the Los Alamos county council voted Geoff Rodgers in as vice chair Tuesday evening. The position was vacated when Ron Selvage resigned last week.

    A procedure for filling Selvage’s council seat also received unanimous support. Staff was directed to solicit letters of intent from those interested in the position, with a deadline of 5 p.m. Aug. 28. Council will appoint one of the candidates in a special session Sept. 6.

    Rodgers recused himself from council’s first business item on the agenda: a recommendation regarding a public access and use plan for the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Rodgers’ wife is employed at the preserve.

  • Bicyclist slightly injured in collision with vehicle on Diamond

    A bicyclist was treated for minor injuries by the Los Alamos Fire Department this morning after colliding with a car at the intersection of Diamond Drive and Sandia.

     LAPD deputy chief Kevin Purtymun said the bicyclist was heading southbound on Diamond and the car was making a left turn from northbound Diamond to Sandia. Purtymun said the driver of the car failed to yield to the bicyclist and the driver was cited. Purtymun added that the bicyclist refused transportation to the Los Alamos Medical Center.

  • Rahn makes first court appearance

    Los Alamos resident Thomas Rahn made his first appearance in Los Alamos Magistrate Court today to face charges that he molested two children.

    Rahn, accompanied by his attorney, entered a “no plea” since they were felony charges. Rahn was arrested in July when Los Alamos County Police issued a warrant for his arrest based on a report given to them by the New Mexico Children Youth and Families Department.

    Rahn was charged with two counts of first -degree criminal sexual penetration of a child under 13, and two counts of criminal second-degree sexual contact with a child under 13.

    His lawyer, Marc W. Edwards, accompanied him to court as well as a friend and supporter Robin Gurule.

    Regional coalition

    The Regional Coalition Business meeting will be at 9 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Rio Arriba County Courthouse.
